Wenger scales change
on: February 17, 2022, 11:05:03 PM
Straight to the point.
I changed scales to Victorinox many times but never to Wenger SAKs.
I have a Wenger Metal 50 (Traveler), the 700 years CH. I like it, since it's close to my perfect SAK, the Mountaineer. But I don't enjoy the stainless steel feel. I wonder if I could change scales.
Is it possible? Would the same technique used on Victorinox knives do it? What scales should I search for. Would Evo scales Victorinox sells now do, or should I use strictly old style Wenger made scales?

I was sure that someone would have done it and he'd knew.

Wenger knives have gone through different attachment methods (clips in the liners or collars a la Victorinox). Either way, the process to remove cellidor scales is the same as for Victorinox: soften with heat then lift the scales with a thin tool. However, I don't know how to remove stainless steel scales without damage. To replace them you'll have to find original Wenger scales (either evo or flat, with the attachment method corresponding to your knife). The newer Victorinox Delémont scales have a different shape (they don't wrap around the external liners the way the old Wenger used to).

Thank you. So it's tricky.

Yup, the metal ones might even be epoxied on. Maybe your best move would be to trade with someone for the red scaled Traveler, so you get what you want and a nice Metal 50 doesn't get destroyed.

Or, I might brush the steel with a Dremel to remove the paint?
