Hello everyone,

First post and just wanting to introduce myself.

I'm a draftsman by trade, with some machining and manufacturing experience. I work in the tool and die trade. I'm also an outdoorsman/bushcrafter.

I'm a big fan of most of the Leatherman multitools. Started out with a Wave, then moved onto a Surge since at the time it was one of the few options that had swappable wire cutters. Most recently, I picked up a Skeletool and swapped the blade for a scalpel adapter.

The reason I've joined the forum is to research and pick some brains regarding some modifications to both the Skeletool and Surge. I love the Skeletool's form, but have found the wire cutters to be insufficient and am trying to find a way to convert it to have the swappable cutters. Any advice with this would be appreciated. As far as the Surge, I'm making an effort to swap what are useless tools for me to something I'll use. The serrated blade is getting swapped for a scalpel adapter, and I'd like to swap the scissors for a dedicated saw blade.

Lastly, I'm looking into making a blade for the Surge out of some better steel, as well as getting some swappable cutter blades made of some better materials (thinking various grades of carbide). This is something I can get done through connections I have at work, and have been debating for a while.

In any case, I'll update with any progress on the above and will probably have a few posts asking for advice. Thanks in advance, I can already tell this is a great forum with a ton of helpful users.

Thanks!
-J. Saylor

I went to college in nanticoke, then met the Mrs and lived in Wilkes barre, moved down to her fav, Philly, but then moved back up to a very small 3 block town called Oneida just outside of hazleton, but we’re settled over in Michigan now,, and a draftsman huh, old school with a tee square or all new age with electronics? Out of 4yrs in high school 2yrs in college and 1yr in jr hi, I took blueprint and drafting never touching a mechanical arm or even a cable slide, only a simple tee, totally old school, i still have two of my aluminum triangles a simple scale and a six inch aluminum scale, I used to have a full size all aluminum, that thing was a beast! I ended up majoring in hvac/p, anyway, welcome aboard, any questions don’t hesitate someone on here will probably find an answer!

South Central PA, around York. Was raised out in Johnstown. I've passed through Scranton a few times, it's a beautiful area. Actually waiting to hear back about a job opportunity over that way. My primary duties as a draftsman are utilizing CAD, though there are some days working off of drawings from the 80s that I break out my manual drafting set. It's definitely a lost art, though. And I know what you mean about the full size aluminum scale, I've got one each for mechanical and architectual, and if I ever need to defend myself at work I would feel more confident with one of those in hand than my knife.

Only significant modification (yet) is to the skeletool. Got a sintered adapter for a scalpel.

I have a similar one coming in for the Surge, which as of yet is stock.

Lol, I’ll never forget one day in college I sat next to someone and I slightly dropped my large scale on the table and it *clonked* so the guy sitting next to me was like “is that plastic or metal”? I was like it’s solid aluminum, cause you can’t use a scale for drawing a line the second they touch a table they get a nick in them and you’ll never get that perfect line, that was until I got that aluminum one! So the guy was like “can I see it” so I hand it over and he starts waving it and he’s like “holy crap, you can beat someone up with this thing” and I was like umm I suppose so,,
Here’s the little guy, idk where the other one went, not that I use them anymore but kinda wish I still had it, I mean on Facebook I keep seeing people selling those mechanical arms and even sometimes along with a desk, for like $50-$100 and I’ve always wanted one but it would kinda be pointless to get since I don’t do anything let alone don’t have any room for one, heck I still have a roll top cartoonist table that’s like 5ft wide, the kid was using it as a computer desk until he wanted a corner desk, I didn’t have anywhere to put it so I ended up building a workstation over top of it, here’s a pic before I finished the workstation, you can see the desk tucked under, it will come out, just not very easy! Lol..
