Satin Finished Atwood Prybaby
on: January 30, 2009, 12:08:38 AM
I was able to pick up this Atwood Prybaby (Gasbaby) for a song. It had a beat up bead blasted finish and that's why I got a good deal on it. I hate bead blasting anyway, so I decided to give it a nice satin finish. I thought you guys might be interested in how I do it. No power tools here, I just get a brand new 3M scotchbrite pad and sand in one direction only. I do the same for the edges, and the hard to reach areas it really doesn't matter. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete the job. For the final sanding I use a well used Scotchbrite pad.

Here is a picture of the Prybaby on the actual Scotchbrite pad that I used.  :tu:

Dave,

Funny you should ask.  :D  I traded or gave away most of my collection. Two months ago I had no Atwoods, now I'm back up to 10 of them. They just seem to find me.   :D

At one time I had the best Atwood collection known to man.  :D  I had over 100 pieces and at least 6 damascus and several custom ones. That's back in the day when Peter loved me!

An Atwood restoration, certainly the first time I've seen one of them.  Nice finish  :tu:

and a nice "new" collection :)

Thanks!   I'm going to buy all the Atwood users I can find at a good price. These tools were made to be used, not sit in a damn safe.  :D  That's why I sold my collection.

Good attitude! Use them! It is funny I live only about 20 mins from him and only own 1 tool. However that long slim prybar intrigues me. I really like it and as omeone whom uses a prybar a dozen times a day I really got to get one!

It's called a "Wedgie" and is no longer made. :(  It was given to me by a member of another forum who found out I was Atwoodless and said i just had to have it. That will always be my most treasured Atwood piece.  :tu:  He could have sold that for big $$$$.  I also have a whistle on the way.

I believe a special think tank was put together at not insignificant cost and after four months deliberation came up with the "RingTool"  note the lack of a space, that's what you pay big money for ;)

John, the Wedgie is 3V steel. Really tough, but breath on it and it will rust.  :D

(Image removed from quote.)

Sorry - I ask a question, then disappear for an hour!

Over 100 Atwoods  :o Wow.

I was eyeing one of those Ti RingTools but missed out. I probably couldn't afford it anyway, so that's maybe just as well :D

I love the thing at the bottom-left with the hex bit - what's that called? I'd really like a MSOPT (Mini son of pry thing) as whilst I do like my G4 PryBaby, and carry it everywhere it's just a little too big for my keyring, so has to travel in my pocket. But I'm being very picky there.

Anyhow did I mention I have a bit of an Atwood collection myself now? No, well here you are:

:D

I used to come here a lot.

John,

My friend Joshua (JDR) makes tools and he makes a tool just like the Wedgie. He can make you one out of titanium if you want. Contact him at the USN.  :tu:

Dave,

The tool on the bottom left is a Crawdaddy.  Nice collection you have there.  :tu:

How easily do you think the finish on that Keyton would scratch off John? It's like a Bronze effect on Ti, but I don't know how he did it.

I'm thinking I'd like to use it, but I'm told it's quite unusual so I'd hate to bugger it up.

It comes off very easy. A couple of good passes on a scotchbrite pad and it's history. Use and abuse it! What good is it sitting in a desk? You could trade it to me.  :D

Well, as I was typing that comment about the Prybaby being a bit to obig for my keyring, that's when I remembered I had it. It's probably actually exactly what I need, and I was just weighing up whether to stick it on my keyring.

Having said that, there's a PM coming your way :) ....
