If your condition is degenerative (ie, continually changes or gets worse) then eye surgery is not permanent. What it will do is bring your vision back to an acceptable level, where it will start to degenerate all over again.
So, basically if your vision was at 100%, then deteriorated to 80%, then you got the surgery, you would start the process over again at 100%. Without the surgery, your eyesight would be down to 60%.
The decision to get corrective eye surgery depends on the condition of your eyes, the deterioration factor and whether you really don't want glasses or not. If you really hate glasses and you have the money to do it, then it makes sense to do it every 3-5 years as necessary. Or if your eyes are degenerating very slowly or not at all, then it also makes sense to do it. Either way, I wouldn't consider it before age 30 as there are still lots of changes (anatomically speaking!) going on as things settle into their permanent places.
Of course, that is the information I've gathered in my research on the topic. I would also suggest that a qualified optician might be a little better suited to provide proper advice on the subject than a bunch of people who argue over what multitool to wear to the beach!
The last piece of advice I have is to listen to credible sources of information, and not search for crackpot warnings in da innernet. As far as I know, no one who has had Lasik has ever exploded, glowed in the dark, or had his eyeballs fried and replaced with Swedish meatballs, although I am certain there are a few thousand sites with similar horror stories on them. I remember reading one about how a guy went for Lasik and not only did the doctor ruin his eyes forever, but also started sleeping with the guy's wife. Funny, I don't recall seeing "adultery" in the list of potential side effects....
