The October 2022 EDC Fixed Blade Challenge
on: August 29, 2022, 01:36:23 AM
It's been a couple of years since we've had an EDC fixed blade challenge so it is time to remedy that.  For the month of October anyone who can do so legally is welcome to join me in carrying a fixed blade knife on their person to use as their primary cutting tool.  You're allowed to carry your multitools or SAKs so long as your fixed blade knife is what you reach for to accomplish your everyday cutting tasks.
Custom or common is up to you.  Whether you carry on your belt, in your pocket, or around your neck is up to you.  You can carry the same fixed blade knife for the entire month or carry a different one every day.  You can carry any fixed blade knife you are comfortable carrying as long as it is legal, although, it should be practical for everyday use.  I would have some doubts about carrying a huge Bowie knife if you don't live in the woods and hunt Grizzly bears for example, but I'm willing to take your word for it if that's what you want to carry.
The only requirements other than it being legal for you to carry a fixie are that:
1) You must post a picture everyday of the fixie you're carrying that day.
2) Your daily post must be numbered as such, Day 01, Day 02, etc., because it is easier for the mods to keep track, and
3) please list each day what knife you're using such as, "Today I used the Mora Basic." because other people might be interested in your knife and would need to know the manufacturer, name or model number in order to look it up.

That's it. Stay safe and stay legal.  Now you all know how this works. Add your name to the list if you want to play and copy and paste the list into your post.
We'll see you in October.  That's plenty of time to polish your blades and to strategically stash plenty of plasters, tape and gauze around your home or work space where you can get to them quickly.

A state law that forbids concealed carry of fixed blades (and is very vague about what constitutes concealment) means I won't be participating. But I'll be checking in just to see what kind of fixies y'awl will be carrying.

I'd be fine with you taking all of your pictures at home if you want to give it a try.  Same goes for the Brit contingent.

My posts may be a little boring (all Garberg, all the time), and a break from challenges likely would do me well. But it would be a good chance to earn the Mora badge. I'll give it some thought.

Y'all can count me in.  I carry a fixed every day for work.  This will be fun to switch things up.  I can even post a few I like to carry around the house.

This is gonna be fun.

Indeed, for some folks, the fixie challenge takes place primarily at home. And that's fair enough. Gives one an excuse to mess around with a fixed blade knife at any rate.  :tu:

I'm in. I know this challenge doesn't require us to stick to one knife, but I'm trying to figure out "one of each size" for the job required. Neck knife, pocket fixed blade, compact fixed blade, full-size fixed blade, and "Now That's a Knife".

It's not really frowned upon here (lots of Bucks and Schrade Sharpfingers I tend to see on belts--and even the occasional Kabar), but there's always been "that person" who seems to make a fuss. Case in point, I drew a Buck 110 to cut a shoelace--no one said a thing. I usually try to take them off my belt first after doing yard/farm work, but no one bats an eye when I leave my Mora Eldris or CRKT Minimalist on my belt. I drew a Classic SD to cut a pattern from paper--a woman who grew up in a city went ballistic.

I really like that Kydex sheath you've got with the Buck Paklite Skinner. I've not been a fan of the bulky nylon sheath it comes with, but for sure, I'm getting the Packlite and Bucklite fixed blades, since they're on special for cheap.

Anybody can make Kydex sheaths with a toaster oven and a hydraulic press, but I bought the sheath for my Buck Paklite skinner 140 from a guy on ebay that seems to do good work.  I specifically looked for one with an equal number of holes on each side so I could mount a Tek Lok or other belt attachment at some point if I didn't like it as a neck knife (I don't).

Come on now, don't be shy.  We need 2 more for a minion. :pok:  In case anyone is on the fence let me incentivize this challenge for you.  I have ordered an engraved commemorative knife that someone who completes the challenge will win at the end of the challenge.  Nothing real high end, but it is something from a well known company and it was designed with EDC in mind.  I just hope it arrives in time.

All of them, of course.  Rotation between knives is allowed.  You don't have to carry the same knife all month.  I will be carrying several knives in rotation so that I can try out some that haven't had a fair amount of attention lately while leaving the known performers on the shelf since I already know what they are capable of.
