Knife-based Multitools

I thought I would share some non-SAK knife-based multitools I have either collected or made. Others are free to join in  :cheers:

This one is my favorite:


Inspired by mods made by Poncho, Sam Lim, and others, it is one handle of a Charge ALX. It has the Charge ALX 154 CM blade, scissors from a Chinese Surge-type MT, a Phillips driver and saw blade from a Core(?), and a Rev Phillips driver modified into an awl. I have a square to 1/4" hex adapter that fits the Phillips driver and a container of bits to go with the tool. I made it to use at work, and it works well for me  :tu:

I really like having this platform to accompany another MT :salute:

I have my Charge knives of course  :cheers: but I do have a couple others I will have to get some pics of :salute:

My latest Charge Knives, the Ti and the G10 :woohoo: the G10 was previously the AL and the Ti was originally as well :cheers:

I admire the temerity of those of you brave enough to modify tools like that.  I know the results are good and you end up with exactly what you wanted, but I was nervous just removing the knife blade from my Leatherman Leap and it is supposed to do that.

Once you take them apart and almost can't get them back together a few times :whistle: it becomes much easier  :D

My first blade swap I nearly had a panic attack when my Wave had a few things fall out that wasn't the blade :ahhh :D

I feel the same way.  I tried a SAK mod at one point and it didn’t go well at all.  I admire the ability perseverance, ability, and end product of those who do modifications.

My first attempt at a mod was trying to do a blade swap on a Multiforce. The blade I tried to swap in did not work, and then I couldn't get the tool back together. It sat in pieces for a month until I gave myself a pep talk  :D

I want to mod a SAK, but I don't know if I will ever try. Peening brass pins seems to me to be a higher level of difficulty.

I wouldn't trust myself with peening brass on alox but cellidor is different  :whistle: you can make it ugly but functional and then file it :D

This is what became of the other handle of my Charge:



The blade is from a Klein multitool, the diamond file from a Multiforce, and the other parts are leftovers from other mods.

I like that blade just as good if bot a bit better than LM stock :think: :salute: :like:

The can opener clicks in just shy of straight:



The large straight driver is inline, but I took off a wee bit too much metal. It doesn't fold up too easily, but it isn't in there quite as well as the can opener.



It takes some work to get the parts to work well with the forked backspring on that end:

So close to being a great multitool knife, yet so far away  :facepalm:

I did bend the backspring on mine a bit to provide a little more detent for the screwdriver arm. So it works better, but still not great.

I quite like my Armbar "Slim" Drive but I do find it a bit fiddly to use the OHO  :dunno:

Awlso, being the UK the locking blade makes it a hard ask to carry. I'd prefer that the driver locked and the blade didn't but had a strong snap, like the Spyderco UKPK (a pocket clip would be a no-brainer)  :think:

There are pocket clips available now. What should have at least been available as an add-on can be bought for $10 on Etsy. That still doesn't correct the floppy driver and poor performing scissors  :twak:

I feel Gerber cheap out on the arm bar. One it’s made in China, two they didn’t consult MTO on the design, if they would read these forums. I mean look at all these great mods above and all over the forum. I don’t get it

This is one of my Multiforce knives. The 2nd one I made, to be precise.





The Ozark Trail Multiforce is a good platform for these types of knives. It comes with a fairly good set of tools and is compatible with Leatherman tools (such as the Phillips driver in the picture above).

I was able to create some pitting on the scales by using salt water and a blow torch. I felt like that gave it an aged look.

But it has seen some use. I have been really happy with the tool set on this one and carried it frequently until I made the Charge knife.

I was surprised to find out it is a decent multitool knife. Worth the $10 - $12 I paid for it  :tu:

I have thought about installing the scissors in my Armbar Drive, for they are definitely better. However, it struck me this morning that this may be a good starter knife for my grandson if he can operate the slide lock mechanism. He certainly couldn't stab himself (or me!) with that blade.
