I just made coffee before seeing your picture so I wasn't triggered, just in need of coffee.

Day Twenty Seven

Using the Surge to open the gas meter cupboard, because nobody has time to search for the yellow plastic triangle key thing, right? (This might be a UK-specific thing…)

That is a great use! We have something similar over here, never thought about using pliers on them though :tu:

Funny,  the blade exchanger is one of the cool features of the Surge, but I have yet to use either the saw in this challenge.  :dunno:

Day 27

I got home today with just enough daylight left to perform my castaway test that I have carried out in every knife and tool challenge I've been part of.  For those not familiar, Tom Hanks' character in the movie, Castaway, finds himself stranded on a tropical island with plenty of coconuts but no easy way to open them.  He makes the comment, "What I wouldn't give for a Swiss Army knife right about now."  To wit, I have determined it necessary to find out if I could open coconuts with the challenge knife or tool.  OK, this one is a "gimmie."  We all know what the Surge is capable of as we've seen most of the contestants on Alone carrying a Surge for the last 10 years.  The thing is they usually end up in Canada, in the snow, and nobody on the show has ever had to worry about opening a coconut.  That leaves it to me.

First I cut the top off the coconut.  I used the straight edge blade which I found easier than the serrated edge for the purpose.  That surprised me.  Then I cut the rest of the husk into segments that I could tear off.  Again, using the straight edge blade.  Then I used the awl to bore out two out of three of the coconut's "eyes" and I drank the coconut water which was delicious and refreshing, even warm.  Finally, I broke open the coconut to get to the meat.  The last couple of coconuts I opened were rotten when I opened them so I was very happy that this one was edible and the meat was as delicious and refreshing as the liquid had been.  It was even better when it was cold.

Maybe. My gas meter is exposed to the elements.

I have determined it necessary to find out if I could open coconuts with the challenge knife or tool.

Day Twenty Nine

After carrying the Surge at work all day, I swapped to the Bond for a few hours to go out for a pizza and a couple of pints this evening. Went to a very modern tap room on an industrial estate where a local brewery had about fifteen of its beers on tap.

Pubs and locking blades are a risky combination in the UK, and my excellent wood-fired Pepperoni came ready cut. A smooth 6% ice cream Porter and a Czech-style lager to wash it down, then a white knuckle ride home with the wife driving.

And because pizza makes every post better…
