Recent spam attacks
on: May 26, 2023, 09:40:21 PM
Two things I have to say about all this spam we see lately:
1) it is in russian, so I wonder why MTO has become a target for their cyber attacks
2) maybe we should limit registration by adding simple questions, like name a company that invented a Swiss Army Knife or who was an inventor of a first poker based multitool. Could be a text box to collect an answer or could even be a selector from like 3 variants. Maybe if that sounds reasonable to you gents let’s have a discussion of like 10 questions we might ask newcomers in order to filter spammers

It isn't recent ;) been getting Russian Spam (and several other countires) for many many years :D most of it gets filtered out quick enough that no one sees it

Always report anything you think seems suspicious though and it helps us keep MTO what it is :tu:

Years ago we got so much spam that I actually created a spam forum.

We deleted links and photos, moved the spam threads there and let members make fun of the spammers, tell them off, whatever they liked.

It was fun for a little while, at least.

Then we put better anti spam software in place and didn't have as much of a need for it.   :D

Roger that

Still what do you guys think about adding a few tool related questions to the registration form? Maybe that’d lure some of those spammers away

Absolutely something we can look into for sure.

I will have to check with Whoey to see what options are available to us before I promise anything more than that.

Well, we could have them answering three questions before enterinng MTo, but that could be dangerous for us, too...
