Victorinox live to explore new collection
on: October 16, 2023, 04:43:41 PM
Victorinox shows a new collection, called "live to explore", consisting of a Classic SD, a Companion and a Swiss card in three color variations each, named  "Paris", "New York" and "Sidney".

Each come with matching accessories, a fob plus charm for the Classic, a (small) lanyard plus charm, for the Companion, and a new style pouch for the Swiss card. The new parcel opener finds a new iteration in the Companion, though a special series and no standard model  The fob and lanyard can also be bought separately.

The colours are cellidor variants with graduations / more colours.

So Victorinox targets the hipster & lifestyle sector again...

Well, they don't look bad...

But I would jump at the chance to buy a Companion in the standard red cellidor.

:iagree: completely. But there's still the hope it could be made   :dunno:

Oh, and the "Paris" Swiss Card looks to me like a child's trial at creating a camouflage pattern.

None of the colours/patterns bring any of the cities to mind...

Yeah, I'm not really seeing the city associations with the various patterns. But I do like the black and gold one!

Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure they’ll appeal to some! Good to see some more Companions coming out after the walnut scaled version - just need to bring out the standard colours, though you could get one of these and change the scales…..

I saw them in the wild today. The black/beige looks nice, the colourful is very 80’s, the pink/pale blue is very… pale, but not really bad. But very likely neither for me.

Overall, I think they look pretty nice. The Sydney ones in particular suits me. I may use it as an excuse to get the Companion.

I think we spend a lot of time dumping on "hipsters" etc. on this forum, but I think there's an argument to be made that they are (and always have been) a major part of Vic's target market. Our noble Spartan started as an officer's knife, and the much loved 74 and 84mm lines were marketed as gentleman's knives. If you're a tradesman knee deep in smurf, you're reaching for a PBMT. If you're a computer programmer, teacher, accountant, etc. who just needs to open some mail and maybe tighten a screw on your desk, a SAK is closer to what you need.

I'd argue the real hipster knives are the $500 super steel folders that'll never do more than open an Amazon box (and probably won't even do that since that'd gunk up the blade.)

I’m sorry, but for me pastel colors do not in any way resonate “exploring”.
That’s gonna leave a mark.

I like the NY and Sydney ones ok. Its not on my list of things I want but my wife carries a Climber and classic, I wonder if these would interest her at all.

I guess I am a little confused at why this model is not being rolled out as a normal SAK. Is there historical precedent for having a model make its way through special editions before being properly released?

This reminds me of the changes Filofax (for those who don't know, think Franklin Covey Planner) made to 'chase' the market.......I'm sure they appeal (as the replies here show) and whilst the box cutter is a welcome addition, for me these are collectors pieces......I'm from the branch of human life that needs a knife, not a chic pastel charm carrier 8).......but business is business and if someone is buying then it supports development and continuance of other SAKs.

Right.  They can call them Susan if it makes them happy, just don't let the company fold.

Well I like these sets
Good to see a little change and innovation at a not too bad price
However as several have said I have no idea what these colours have to do with the cities in question or exploring

And why is all the marketing blurb on the website targeting women for these models? ???
I guess they are trying to access/expand the female market just like Lego did with Lego Friends a few years ago
But I’d be very happy to have one of these in my pocket or car

So Victorinox targets the hipster & lifestyle sector again...

Remember - whether its the "Live to Explorer" collection, or the Leatherman Arc or the Garage series, it is always, always, always about the money.  We tend to think that the marketing should make sense, or that that Victorinox and Leatherman love SAKs and MTs as much as we do.  But none of that really matters to them.  Its all about the revenue stream.  But that's how we end up with fun toys, so I'm not complaining.  Its just that Victorinox/Leatherman and MTO Phreaks are operating on different wavelengths.

I sorta like the Live to Explore lineup, but would prefer a decent phillips on the Companion.  The flat end on the box opener, and the nail file, would prolly work.  I'm leaning toward getting one.

"Explore" does not necessarily mean to go to a jungle / the north pole or so. It can also simply mean go to a different city or eat at the Thai restaurant you saw on TripAdvisor. You can explore the town you live in (many have not been to all parts of the place they live in).
I'm with powernoodle here... they don't need to make sense. They are just color variations, like all the Classics or the Annual Alox versions.

That said. I think coloring the small bits (T&T etc.) would have elevated the sets. And if they had not just blackened the key-ring but also the tools on the rainbow set, that would have been amazing.
It wouldn't be the internet without people complaining.

I try not to criticize when companies come out with new stuff because I'm happy when they try and innovate and bring new stuff to the market even if it's not my cup of tea.

The sad part is all of those would be illegal to explore with in Paris and Sydney, as I understand it at least.

True - This is a theme for all (???) Victorinox naming  :o
ie What has a Huntsman got to do with hunting or a Mountaineer to do with mountaineering etc etc   :o     :o

Also agree with you about the T&T Mr E - That is a shame and missed opportunity

I like these but they are kinda pricey for what they are.  I don't fault them for putting these out.  Some people will be delighted to get them. Guess I'm waiting for the red celidor model.

Not my cup of tea, but to each their own.  I'm certainly not going to begrudge anyone who like them.

I typically don't care for printed cellidor anyway, as I don't think they make good users.  The scales age poorly.

As the various replies show, there's a mixed bag here. I wish Victorinox best sales and new market sectors in abundance. Keep the ship afloat and such. :D

So nice additions like this year's winter magic can be produced. As I'm collecting Classics and SwissCards, some of these models surely will find a way to my home.  :gimme:  :dunno:

And considering the female parts of the market, perhaps it's just the beginning: the male versions will come in different camouflage patterns and serrated blades, called the Alamo, Kiew and Dunkirk ... :bnghd: Not to forget the metrosexual Las Vegas with gold and silver glitters, appealing to all genders (plus the Las Vegas LE with real gold & silver, starting at a premium of $499 ...)  :twak:
Best regards and stay safe,

Wolfgang
