Heavy Duty Multi Tool Questions

Hello all you wonderful folks. Question or three for you. In the world of the multi tool, which brand and models within the brand are considered their heavy duty offerings? Not just largest size, but rather which models are the tanks of the multi tool world? My guess in the Leatherman line is the Super Tool 300. Thanks for the help.

If you go by weight, the Surge clocks in at 12.5 oz; the Swisstool at 9.9 oz.  Subjectively, for me the Surge is the most beastly.  The Dual Force is up there too.

OTOH, one would be hard-pressed to find any MT that ever reached the end of its life cycle.  I once bought a TSA-confiscated black Swisstool Spirit that was pretty well thrashed, but even it has tons of life left in it.

As for breaking an MT, that's pretty unusual and usually means you are using it outside its design parameters by prying with the blade or whatnot.  Its possible to break an MT plier, but that's pretty rare.

But if I had to pick one beastmaster of the bunch, I would go with the Surge.

Fair question,  and PowerNoodle is spot on, for beast mode. 

For me, it is reliability,  the SuperTool 300 is tops on my list, just because there are  no bits to slip out and go missing, in built Phillips driver, dedicated flat blades,  and an AWL.    I am not a scissors guy :dunno:m

Yet, proprietary tools designed for the task should be your first option, but if not available a MT will help assist.  that is how i used my ST300 in the field for almost 8 years working specialized construction when my truck was across a field or site.

And, also, I have great respect for the Victorinox Spirit model. it is a tank, and also a BEAUTIFUL work of art.   I like the Butter blade model personally, but have the PE model too!  (just completed a 60 day challenge with the Spirit)

In fact, search the Leatherman topic, for Tool name CHALLENGES, to learn how the different models are used in real life.  Also great tool porn pictures included.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hmm interesting that you choose MP800 over MP600, i have both and honestly im affraid use MP800 on heavier duty just cause it feels too soft while squeezing while i dont get same feeling with MP600.

I have thrashed upon my Swisstool and Surge never once worried about them breaking.  I'd defer to PW and others regarding Gerber and SOG.

Look at my profile pic/name  ;)

I use my O/G Surge on a daily basis for cutting cargo straps and wire/steel banding (on freight packages etc)

I awlso use the scissors on a fairly regular basis and the Surge has never failed me.

I bought a B/O V2 Surge to replace it a couple of years ago and it still lives in its pouch as the O/G is still going strong.

NB: I've never owned the ST (any variant) as I need OHO for work so can't comment on that as an option  :think:

I'm not sure what others might say is "Heavy Duty" but I've used my original Leatherman Super Tool, for years, and it's done everything I've asked it to do.
Like powernoodle said though it's important not to use your tools for other than they were designed for.

IMO the Gerber MP600 with Blunt Nose pliers and replaceable cutters is hard to beat as a "Tank" of a tool that can take some abuse and keep on functioning.  Get one with the tool holder component and you can even have a choice of blades, saws, files etc.
