Pawn Shop Score
on: January 05, 2024, 09:23:39 PM
I had a few minutes before the hockey game started (so many Canadian stories start that way!) so I decided to stop in to my local pawn shop.

Last year I managed to score a MUT at this shop for a good price, so imagine my surprise when I saw another MOLLE sheath!

I figured it was another MUT, so I asked to see it and what looked like a PST.

The kid behind the counter was nice enough to show me both of them, and when I opened the MOLLE sheath I noted that it wasn't a MUT- it was a first generation Surge, which also had a Schrade diamond steel with it.   :o

I may have wee'ed a little as I saw the Charge style pocket clip on it, the TWO nylon spare blade covers and the small eyeglass screwdriver still being in it.   :ahhh

I didn't want to draw attention to what they had, so I didn't open the nylon cases- a quick squeeze of the MOLLE case told me there was something in there, but I couldn't tell what.

It wasn't until I got home that I opened them up and found a Bosch metal saw, a LM wood saw (plus the factory wood saw installed on the Surge) and TWO diamond files!!!!  :woohoo:

There was a $99.99 price tag on the Surge (about $75 USD) which seemed like a bit more than I wanted to spend, but there was a PST to look at to buy me time to think about it.

Nice score times  2.
The Surge looks new !

The PST sheath looks brand new😉
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

Sorry for the crap pictures, I'll get better ones soon!

Anyways, on to the PST- and really, who couldn't use a spare PST around the house?   :D

Initially I opened it up to see the date code.  One handle said
0496 and I was so intent on seeing the date codes and distracted by thoughts of the Surge that I didn't realize that I'd pulled out a diamond file on this PST.

It hot me when I went to check the opposite handle date code to see if they matched and I saw the scissors... And the serrated blade.....   :ahhh

This wasn't a PST, it was a PST 2!   :woohoo:

It was a bit more used than the Surge, but both were on great shape.  There's some surface rust on the PST 2, but nothing that couldn't cleaned up very easily.

The PST 2 had a price tag of $49.99 on it, which is a fair bit not great price for it, so I put them both in their cases and asked the kid of they'd take $120 (about $90 USD) for the pair.

They did, so I gave them the cash, stuck the tools in my pocket and was about to walk out....

When I noticed the Ka-Bar Zombie Chop Stick for $40...

https://www.onestopknifeshop.com/store/ka-bar-original-zombie-chop-stick-machete-5704.html

I pulled it from the sheath and it looks like it had already been used for a whole season of The Walking Dead so I left it there.

That having been said, I may have to go back and get it.

It's not as good a score as the one BlindFarmer had:

https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,91801.0.html

But for Canada, this was not a bad deal at all!

The PST sheath looks brand new😉

If the Surge was used, it wasn't used much.  It has some corrosion on it, but it likely got that just from sitting here, where rust is a way of life.  You've seen how close I am to the ocean!

The PST also doesn't appear to have been used much, but has more rust on it, which would be expected on a tool kept in a leather sheath in Halifax for almost three decades.

Thanks!

I don't score that often, but it's a great feeling when I do.

Mostly if I see something here for a similar price to what I could get it for in the US I consider it a great price.

Great score Grant. The OG Surge looks great and a little spa treatment and it will be good as new. The PST II looks to be in good serviceable shape and I bet with a little time and patience you will have it looking good as well.  :like:

Dang, I wish I could find deals like Charges for $40!

Here are some better pics of the PST II that I took for the MTO Instagram account.
