Day 24

Great pics and uses awl. Pretty happy with how this challenge is going. Only a few days left.

Today we went to a gas engine show. Used the main blade to cut up hot dogs and cheeseburgers.

When we got home I used the blade, scissors, and Phillips to put together a wooden table for the kids.

Still catching up.

Sounds interesting! What sort of engines were on show?

It was bigger than I thought it would be. A lot of of 20s John Deer type E engines. Variety of 1.5HP to the later 6HP.  Some pretty neat early 1900s IH and some Briggs. Spent more time with the tractors, which were mostly Farmall. It’s funny out here the John Deere 1.5E (I think) was popular for water pumps while the Farmall H and M were popular for the tobacco fields. Farmall A was also popular.  Not as many John Deere as Farmall. Some case and Ford sprinkled about.

It was fun but the most fun is watching the kids get so excited.

How’s the challenge going? I’ve been out of the loop on a trip out of the country this pas week but I’m back home!

From this challenge, I’m curious if anyone sees any screw stripping from the inline Phillips. The driver is well made, of course, but it seems to be a sort of “in between” size head, between a #1 and a #2 kind of? I could see that potentially tearing up some cheaper screws…

I’ve been using the Explorer inline Philips extensively for a while and I’ve rarely had it cam out or strip a screw head. It’s small enough to fit #1 and wide enough at the base for #2.  It has only failed me on wood screws where I really need a drill. I think it’s the same size as the Spirit Philips. Both work great.

Day 26

Scissors on mustache duty again.

Large blade opened some popsicles for the kids.

I used both the inljne Phillips and the corkscrew in an attempt to remove some plastic balls that had become stuck inside another toddler toy.

The inline Phillips worked great for removing the six Phillips screws.  However, once they were out, I realized that the whole toy was still held together by an intricate series of interlocking plastic tabs, which I wasn’t going to be able to disengage without breaking.

Moving to plan B, the plastic balls had holes in them that were about the right size for the corkscrew; I was able to screw the corkscrew into them, and then use the Explorer as a handle to pull them out.  I was able to retrieve two out of three balls using this method.  The third was simply wedged too tightly and too far in to reach with the corkscrew.

Challenge totals:
Large Blade 22
Small Blade 31
Scissors 18
Hook 1
Inline Phillips 4
Toothpick 1
Cap lifter 1
Magnifier 1

The surface of my main workbench has developed some divots and gouges I wanted to fill.  I opened a used tube of filler and found the nozzle clogged.  Explorer awl was used to remove the clog.  It worked well.  Applied filler is now drying.

Day 28: I was away for most of the weekend, at my cabin in the mountains, where there is no Internet, so I have a few days of carry to catch up on.

After the success of my new raised garden bed at home, I decided to set one up at the cabin as well, with big boy tomato plants, chamomile, mint, basil, and sunflowers. The knife and Philips driver were both used to unbox and build the raised bed.
