Repaired Grappler
on: May 28, 2024, 08:22:59 PM
Recently i cheaply got a broken Grappler.
Unfortunately it is a Gen1 Model with the badly designed Part for the Adjustment Screw.
Obviously in a woeful State with the Pliers basically useless

It is perfectly usable again. Only requires a slightly different Technique to retract the Pliers. That big Hole which is now filled with the SetScrew was providing Clearance for the Pin of the ReleaseButton. So to depress the Button fully (to release the Pliers), the Handles have to be opened slightly. No Issue at all

I strongly recommend this cheap Hack for Anyone that has the same Gen1 Grappler. That Part will break sooner or later at the huge Hole for the Pin. Simply filling it with a SetScrew provides the needed Stability for Years to come

Brilliant repair! Did you weld in the set screw?  It would need something to make the two parts one again.

It almost seems like the set screw just provides enough tension to keep the parts in line.  He said he cut threads with a tap then just turned in a brass set screw.  That would have been tricky.   Evidently he got it to work.  I don't think I would have thought to repair it that way.  Best wishes.  G

Did you weld in the set screw?

No Weld, just Locktite and a snug Fit. That SetScrew is not going anywhere and is sufficiently handling the Load when using the Pliers for Light- to Medium-Duty Tasks. I would never trust a Grappler anyway with Heavy-Duty gripping ..

To compare the Changes ..
Here is Gen2 of the Grappler with the Part for the AdjustmentScrew vastly improved. They shortened the Screw and used the free Space to beef up the Part properly.

This is the shoddy Part modeled in 3D, ready to be printed/sintered. Note that this mixes Gen1/2 and requires shortening the AdjustmentScrew quite a Bit (just like in Gen2). Forum does not allow arcane Attachments .. so rename *.stl.doc to *.stl. Sizes in mm. Make sure to look around for resonable Offers. Here in Germany i can get this in Titanium for 100$

I forgot about the Grappler!  The used ones are mighty salty on the used market

Trilby, I think you are the Grappler expert.  I didn't realize the prices of these things on the secondhand market until Barry mentioned it.  Wowsers.  Best wishes.  G

Optional v24 with added 2.5mm Hole for a M3x3mm SetScrew to retain the PivotAxle (needs to get threaded) ( M3x4mm will also work)

You can preview these in 3D at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6652755

If You do not need this extra SetScrew, use v22 above

Rename *.stl.doc to *stl

* grappler24.stl.doc (Filesize: 173.03 KB)
