The Limited Edition Titanium Olight
on: February 12, 2009, 06:19:05 AM
I owned this flashlight briefly.  It was great light.  Forward (tactical) clicky which I really liked.  The pressure of the switch was just right.  The entire flashlight was made from a solid bar of titanium.  Now how cool is that! 8)
If I remember right, the lens was a sapphire crystal.  But don't quote me on that.  The coolest thing about the light besides being titanium was that the maximum output is 200 lumens!  And you can adjust the brightness infinitely anywhere between 2 and 200 lumens.
Alas, I ended getting rid of the flashlight.  A friend convinced me to buy this other flashlight (that's also titanium), which was smaller and had clip.

There are disadvantages for having an all Ti flashlight.  But it doesn't stop me.
I'll be doing a short review on one that I carry everyday.

There are the manufacturing cost of titanium as well.  The material is expensive in the first place, and then machining it is hard on machines and its tooling.  You go through a lot of tooling, and the work on Ti is slow and tedious.
Also, the technology of LEDs is moving at a tremendous pace.  Flashlights are so much brighter than they used to be.  And what goes with being brighter is greater heat build up.  Titanium doesn't dissipate heat as well as aluminum.  That can result to damage to the light engine (LE).
