New member saying hello
on: June 03, 2024, 05:50:33 PM
Hi, my name is Luke and I'm happy to be a new member here!  I just wanna say hello and share the story of my 'formative' SAKs with you. I have carried SAKs almost my entire life and I am glad that I haven't lost one yet (well, at least not unintentionally. More on that later.)

My first SAK was a Wenger Traveler (3 layers with scissors). This knife was given to me in the mid 90s by my grandmother shortly after my grandfather passed away. That was when I was approximately 8 years old. The knife was his but I can't remember if he acutally carried it regularly. I know that it was pretty much in like new condition when I got it. I was proud to be trusted with a real knife and I could carry and use it without any parental supervision. Another SAK came into my life but unfortunately I can't remember how or from whom I got it. It is a Victorinox Champion with the aluminium tip tweezers. What I remember is that it never had a Victorinox logo on the front scale. Maybe it was already worn away or the first owner polished the front scale to remove a company logo? I have no idea.
With these two knives I had a terrific duo for a kid. When I went on 'adventures' or played outdoors I took the Champion with me. Otherwise I carried the Wenger Traveler which was much more pocket friendly.

When I was 16-18 years old I found the red SAKs to be somewhat childish and I stopped carrying one. But when I went to college I discovered the story of the alox Soldier model and bought one. That was in 2008 and I got a 2005 production model. I loved this knife and carried it daily. I loved it for its story (the actual swiss army knife!) and the more beefy tools. And the awl was very useful in many situations. But this is the only knife that I eventually 'lost'. When I got married, my wife and I travelled to New York City for the first time. I brought my Soldier with me and used it for daily tasks during our trip (opening stuff, cutting sandwiches in half, tightening a lose screw in the Airbnb,...). One evening we visited the Rockefeller Center's observation deck (Top of the Rock). I did not know that there is airport-like security at the entrance and when I discovered it, it was already too late... I asked a member of the staff if I could leave my knife with them and pick it up later, but that was denied. So I had to give up my Soldier and throw it in the trash...  :ahhh It did hurt emotionally, but it was the rational thing to do: a $25 knife vs. $120 tickets. And I knew that I had a '07 and '08 Victorinox Soldier plus a Wenger Standard Issue all NIB in my collection.

When my Soldier was gone I stopped carrying SAKs for a while and got into higher end folders from Benchmade, Spyderco and Chris Reeve. But 3-4 years ago I discovered the Victorinox Compact which got be back into carrying SAKs again and have carried one daily ever since (and no higher end folder again) .I even bought another NIB '05 Victorinox Soldier to replace the lost one. The Compact was kicked out of my pocket recently by the Companion, as it does everything that the Compact does (nail file!) and features more tools (package opener is really handy) while maintaining a slim 3 layer profile. We'll see whether it will replace the Compact long-term. In the last years I have built a small collection of roughly 25-30 pieces and I'll share some pictures in the respective threads soon!

Best regards,
Luke

Welcome to the forum, Luke, and many thanks for sharing your story.

When I read how you temporarily dropped out of SAKs for them being too childish just to eventually re-discover them, I was reminded of Lego and how many Afols have gone through similar "dark ages". Maybe it's not a coincidence that this forum also hosts a lot of Lego enthusiasts ?

Shame about the Soldier you had to throw away. Economically speaking, you did the right thing of course - still, I can imagine your trip to NY might have been slightly tainted by the incident. On the other hand, I for one believe that you cannot be a real SAK-head if nothing tragic ever happened to make you realise that they are more than just tools and how emotionally attached you can get to them. I lost my trusted Swisschamp when living abroad as a student and regret it to this day :-[

Anyway, good to have you here and keep the stories coming!

All the best,

Simon

Edit: I am also edc'ing the Companion these days thanks to my wife gifting me the Swiss Spirit model. I really really like the package opener, it's just so very versatile. Wish more members of this forum gave it a try (but appreciate it's difficult to get Companions at decent prices...).

The Swiss Spirit edition is cool, that's a nice gift from your wife! Glad you like the Companion too. I also think that it's under appreciated solely because of the price (don't be so cheap guys! >:D ). My wife actually encouraged me to buy one despite the price. She liked the Syndney style scales, so I got the knife and she got the scales mounted on her Climber  8). Win-win for both of us!

Should anyone now know what AFOLs are: Adult Fans Of Lego.

Welcome aboard, Luke! I'm a little like you in that I realized that SAKs (specifically the Bantam) and Opinels handle my normal urban needs quite well, and $100-150 can get me a supply of backups. Sorry to hear that security at Top of the Rock were a bunch of smurfholes, too.

Thanks for the warm welcome!  :)

I have enjoyed the pictures y'all have shared in this forum and I'd like to do my part as well and share some more pics. But here's my newbie question: what's the preferred way to share pictures? I'm mostly using my iPhone and browse the forum via the mobile page. Currently I see two options:
  • using an image hosting service such as Imgur or Photobucket and use the links to embed pics in my reply.
  • using an iOS shortcut to resize the photos and use the attachment function of the forum. However it looks like I can't integrate those pictures into my reply text, right?

So what's your way of doing it?

Best regards,
Luke

Looks like you have that down pat. But I'll share my method anyway.

After I take a picture, I edit it with Photoshop Express. The edits are basic: enhanced clarity and sharpness, corrected exposure, and resizing. I also rotate them if necessary.

When posting, there is a link below the text box that reads "attachments and other options." Clicking or tapping it gives you the "choose file" button. After you choose your image, it should get uploaded. A link or button that reads "insert attachment 0" will appear . Clicking or tapping that will place the attachment wherever the cursor happens to be in the text box.

Some members use the Tapatalk app, which is almost certainly a little too new-school for me.

I hope that's been helpful.

I mostly use the Tapatalk app on an iPhone, which resizes the pics automatically and allows you to attach them to posts directly from the photo gallery of your phone.  The downside of this is that the ads on Tapatalk have become more and more intrusive of late.

Less convenient options I’ve used include emailing the pics to myself (and using the email program’s function to resize them), or using Paint on a Windows PC.

Thanks Farmer X for this extensive how-to. Let me give it a try in this post. Luckily I carried the Champ today. It helped me to pull out the (now defective) connector of our toothbrush. I'm gonna take it apart tonight and see if I can fix it.
