Today marks 80 years since the best-known D-Day. It was the start of
Operation Overlord, which began the liberation of France. By all accounts I've read, the trip from England to France was a rough one. The operation lasted into the end of August 1944. The Allies lost over 4,000 aircraft and about 4,000 tanks. Over 36,000 American, Canadian, and British troops were killed. I don't know how many Operation Overlord veterans are still with us, but it's safe to say "not many." The youngest of them who wouldn't have had to lie about their age to enlist would today be 98.
Amphibious warfare doctrine has changed drastically in the 80 years since D-Day. We will never again see a true amphibious operation on such a grand scale. What was previously done over water is now done largely through the air. Heck, the initial ships of the
America class don't even have well decks.
That truly was the Greatest Generation.

Those who fought in WWII have my eternal respect.
