The 80th anniversary of D-Day
on: June 06, 2024, 09:01:08 PM
Today marks 80 years since the best-known D-Day. It was the start of Operation Overlord, which began the liberation of France. By all accounts I've read, the trip from England to France was a rough one. The operation lasted into the end of August 1944. The Allies lost over 4,000 aircraft and about 4,000 tanks. Over 36,000 American, Canadian, and British troops were killed. I don't know how many Operation Overlord veterans are still with us, but it's safe to say "not many." The youngest of them who wouldn't have had to lie about their age to enlist would today be 98.

Amphibious warfare doctrine has changed drastically in the 80 years since D-Day. We will never again see a true amphibious operation on such a grand scale. What was previously done over water is now done largely through the air. Heck, the initial ships of the America class don't even have well decks.

That truly was the Greatest Generation. :hatsoff: :salute: Those who fought in WWII have my eternal respect.

I unfortunately don't have something that old but it is good to remember The Greatest Generation.

I just read an article in a Belgian newspaper saying less than 1% of WWII veterans are still alive today.

I believe less than 120.000 out of 16.4 million, and the heartbreaking reality is that, each day, 131 of those brave men die...

We visited the British and American memorials a week beforehand. Was a pretty good moment before it was impossible without authorization during the events.

I still want to go back over, we had intended to visit the German and Canadian cemeteries but the weather turned foul... additionally it was all in prep mode for the big VIP areas for the day, so not the best experiences.

small selection from the day...
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.
