I can spot a few subtle differences. What was done to the one on the left?

Day 25
[ Quoting of attachment images from other messages is not allowed ]

The Resilience on the left is almost 1/8 inch shorter than the other.  Before I bought it, the tip must have been busted off, but the fix was nicely done.  They reprofiled it well.  I did clean it up a little, though.

Day 26
I got this Tanto in a trade with Joel Bukiewicz (before he became Cut Brooklyn) maybe 15 years back.
It's 1/4 154CM,iirc,11.75 in oal with a 6.5 in blade.
Full flat grind with a convexed cutting edge.
Pretty solid knife, feels great in the hand, mean chopper for the size

Day 26

Opening cat food bags is something I have to do too frequently.

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

Apparently my hand smelled like cat food after that task, thus Sophie's lack of interest in the No. 12.

Day 27

No Giant usage today, but the No. 12 is looking pretty awesome. It's shown with the No. 6 I briefly thought I'd lost. Instead, I'd inexplicably put it in the closet.

Day 24

This is the Junglee Short Sword.  It lives up to its name with a 14 1/2” Teflon-coated AUS-8 blade.

The rubber handle is reasonably comfortable.

The Kydex sheath seems decent quality.  Interestingly, it is quite loose on the blade, i.e. not form-fitted/not designed for a friction fit, relying on gravity and or the retention strap to hold the knife in.

I have to admit that I haven’t carried or used this one.  The only use I can think of would be in a machete type role, and there isn’t much call for that in the woods of PA.

Day 25

This is a Case-made C. Platts’ Sons Large Clasp knife.  Its wide blade is about 4 1/4” of ATS-34 steel.

Handle slabs are bone, with a nice color and comfortable jigging.  Bolsters are nickel silver.

I’ve never used or carried this one.  I’m not opposed to doing so, just never really felt the need.

Day 26

This is the Cold Steel Pocket Bushman. Its clip point blade is 4 1/2” of 4116 stainless steel.

While it is possible to OHO the knife using the dual thumb studs, it is neither easy nor quick, as the action is extremely stiff (at least out of the box).  It is quicker, easier, and safer to 2HO this knife.

Cold Steel’s Ram Safe lock locks the folder  open very securely, with no blade play in any direction.  It is a bit of a pain to unlock and close, however, as the lock must be pulled back with considerable force (this would be difficult to accomplish without the included paracord) and held there while the blade is started on its closing path.

The handle is surprisingly comfortable, secure, and solid, especially considering it is simply a folded and shaped piece of sheet metal.  It features a pocket clip that can be switched for RH or LH carry, but tip up only.

While perhaps not unexpected for an all-steel knife of this size, the Pocket Bushman tips the scales at 6.6 oz.

I’ve never used or carried this one.  The amount of force required to OHO the knife and the lack of OHC capability make me not want to carry it.  However, if you’re in the market for a large, inexpensive folder that feels like it would stand up to considerable abuse, the Pocket Bushman might be worth a look.

Day 28

A while back, I wondered what barbecue sauce would do to carbon steel. Let's see...

[ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

I had to abandon the effort and finish with a brush. The pan wasn't allowing the No. 12 to do its best work. I'm still not sure if the barbecue sauce helped with the patina.

Day 27

This is the CRKT Strafe.  It’s 4 5/8” blade is 8Cr13MoV.

The plastic sheath is an interesting design, incorporating a J-hook.  The sheath doesn’t seem like terrible quality, but unfortunately fails the shake test.

I haven’t used or carried this one.  It seems like a cool design, but CRKT just went a little too cheap on the execution.

Day 29
Another big un from CS.
The Laredo is a decent Bowie (if you disregard the braided wire/pommel thing),and does work.
A friend of mine had to use 1 in the closest thing to a knife fight we've personally encountered.
My friend was repping hardware a few hours away,in a really dodgy area and stopped after hitting a pothole. As he was checking 1 of the tyres, the other guy yelled "hey",so my friend turned, and intercepted a knife coming at his face/upper chest with his left hand, while simultaneously drawing his Laredo. The other guy got a a few cuts and remembered he left his stove on.
My buddy needed stitches.
We were attending a combatives class together at the time, and my buddy's training and the grace of God saved him from being another statistic.

I like the red hardware!

This was a great challenge to participate in. The big blades faced down only one task that they couldn't quite handle, so they proved their mettle. Seeing the No. 12 develop its patina was a lot of fun, and it will be seeing additional duty in the kitchen. I'll also take it with me during camping trips (whenever that will be) when food will actually be cooked. The Old Hickory is now my go-to kitchen knife. I enjoyed seeing the many big blades y'awl have collected, and hopefully I'll add a few more to my arsenal. That should be easier after I move.

Thanks to my fellow challengers for making it great, and to Nate for hosting it! :hatsoff:

Day 30

For the final official challenge photos, I shall contrast forced vs. naturally developed patina.

Farmer X-
I like the red hardware!

Thank you!  I bought the red screws off etsy, and the deep pocket clip.  Some of the red has rubbed off one or two of the screws, but in their defense,  I do pull keys and stuff that rub on them out of my pockets.  The titanium deep pocket clip works very well.

Love those Opinels!  And that Old Hickory! Very cool.

Day 28

This is the CRKT M40-15.  The 4” CE blade is 1.4116 stainless steel.

The blade sports dual thumb stubs, but I find it easiest and quickest to open it with the flipper tab.

It locks up solidly thanks to CRKT’s Deadbolt lock.  It’s also a cinch to OHC; simply depress the button and give it a little reverse wrist flick.

The action is great.  It’s a fun fidget knife.

F&F isn’t bad, but lacks the refinement I would like to see in a knife at this price point.

I’ve carried and used this one some, but the CE blade makes it less than ideal for a lot of my needs; and at 5.9 oz, you don’t forget you’re carrying it.

Day 30

This is the Buck 120 General.  It’s 7 3/8” blade could make other knives feel inadequate by comparison.
:-P

This particular version features a DymaLux wood handle, aluminum guard and pommel, and D2 steel.

This knife feels great in the hand.  It’s well-balanced and the handle really locks it in.

I’ve carried this one some, and it typically rides in the console of one of my vehicles, though I haven’t used it much.

The factory sheath doesn’t meet my personal requirements for a knife I’m going to carry, so this one rides around in aftermarket kydex.

It’s been a fun month.  Special thanks to the few, the proud, the brave, who completed this challenge with me:  FX, HARM, and TAKM!
