I guess it was my time to score pretty good today.
on: September 06, 2024, 06:21:46 AM
Following Def's thread of scoring pretty good, I guess it was my day. I stopped at the west end pawn shop after work today and looked around and didn't see anything that looked interesting. I then asked the guy behind the desk if they had any multi-tools. He pulls a metal basket from behind the desk and plops it on the counter. I noticed something peeking near the bottom of the basket. I extricated the item and my mind couldn't believe what I was seeing, The price on the box said 49.99. I opened it and couldn't believe my luck, It was a pristine Victorinox Champion in a pristine box with instructions. I thought to myself how did this old new stock ended up at the bottom of a steel basket full of sharp and pointies. This had to be in someone's collection. Oh the stories this item could tell. I put that item aside and figured on digging around in there for other items.

One of the bigger and most obvious items in the basket was this Camillus Carnivore XZ. I have 2 other models but not this one. I put that one aside in the I may get it pile. The Victorinox was in my want pile.

Hidden at the bottom was this cute little micro utility knife from Kobolt. It featured nice gold utility blades. I even noticed the small button that opens to reveal extra blades. That told me this was hardly used if at all. A neat find. I placed that in the maybe pile along with the Carnivore. Both items didn't have a price.

then I noticed a pair of Ruko knives in their boxes. Both had a price tag of 5.00 dollars. I noticed that the knives appear to be from the same family due to their common construction features. I figured that for 10 dollars for both, I couldn't say no. Those were added to the Victorinox knife which to me is the big prize of this haul.

I took everything I was interested in and brought it to the guy behind the desk. I ask him how much for the 2 items that didn't have a price. He looks at the items, looks at me, looks at the items again. and tells me 50.00 for it all. SOLD!

I still can't believe I found a vintage SwissChamp let alone one is top condition. The rest I got for free frankly. I guess I could look at it the other way, that I got the Victorinox for free. Either way it was a great day.

Whatever inspired you to stop at that store today was fortunate. Your good timing paid off.

Awesome score man!

You got a heck of a bargain for sure.  That SwissChamp is worth a heck of a lot more than you paid for the whole shebang.

That Camillus is interesting too.  I’d love to see more of it, maybe in comparison with the other two you have?

The other 2 are in deep storage upstairs. That would take some time to get out.

I do have older photos I can share right now though.

Here is the first model. The Carnivore.
20210508_110935A by Chako, on Flickr

The second model is the Carnivore X.
20210508_110737A by Chako, on Flickr

Both of these are longer and more machete like. The Carnivore XZ is like a giant Bowie knife in size. Stll a chopper but not as long.

This style of knife is becoming very common nowadays, especially after seeing Forged In Fire: Knife or Death and other cutting competitions.  Cold Steel is even doing a model and was (I think) the only production blade to be used on the show.

https://www.coldsteel.com/jimi-slash-competition-chopper/

I've been interested in this blade style for years but I really don't have any of them.  I'd be interested to hear what you may think of them after some use.

Wow what a find Chaks - Love the Champion of course

So it's a late 70s early 80s model - Decade determining factor would be the Vic shield - SS or NS?

Why do finds like this never happen to me?  ???

Well H maybe because you do not go to garage sales or pawn shops    :pok:     :o

The original Carnivore had an issue with it not being full tang. Some reports of the handle breaking under heavy use. The second Carnivore X  fixed that issue and also came with a cool one piece multi tool. Both of these I bought as machetes for my collection. The Carnivor XZ is shorter and would be a good candidate for what you listed Def. They are all choppers. Just stay away from the original.

I would have given $50 CAD for just the Champion in an eyeblink. That's a strong contender for the deal of the century...congratulations! :like:

The Camillus Carnivore XZ would be pretty much illegal in the UK now (classed as a Zombie Knife  ::))

Very nice, regardless  :tu:

https://heinnie.com/blog/2024-amendments-to-the-zombie-knife-legislation/

The above is from HH who are pretty good at explaining this stuff without being too technical.

FYI: We awl know it's BS as criminals won't abide by the law but TBF it is a thing here in the UK (we can't buy most guns)
They don't like it up 'em!

You still collecting Dan  :D
That collection of yours must be off the scale (literally) these days.

Nice find, there’s nothing like those opportunities here in the UK these days, knife laws, rules and regulations  have seriously impacted such chances.

I am well, thanks for asking.
Dan, You will never stop collecting 😂👍🏻
I haven’t purchased anything multitool wise for years. After Wenger disappeared I couldn’t face starting over again. So glad I didn’t go after Victorinox or Leatherman… I’d be like you  :mail: still addicted 🤣

Holy S**T Dan
OMG, you need….therapy 😂🤣😂
That’s insane.

My collection is condensed into 4 large plastic storage boxes. All shoved in the attic and buried over now. The shop displays and display stands  along with bits of merchandise (probably over 100) are stuffed into the roof space of the garage.
None of it has seen the light of day for several years!

The only tools I have to hand are
Vic Explorer
OG Wave
Another but can’t remember…

…Oh, and a Wenger Giant😂. My other Giant 😇 is in the loft buried, that one was bought and put away instantly.

I used to keep a sly eye open for Wenger realtrees…especially the snows   but gave up years ago. TBH I’m content  with what I have, as collections go it’s not too bad. Hopefully son will appreciate it when he stumbles across it one day.

Lol
Not so much physical pain, just got fed up of spending constantly.  It was an addiction, plus  fear of missing out with the constant and relentless new releases or trawling online for the missing pieces….all got too much.

Cured now… I think ??
