93mm awl: how to fit in a 91mm
on: October 06, 2024, 10:16:14 AM
I saw many times people using the inline awl from the 93mm in their custom 91mm, replacing the small blade.

I measured the awl to be 0.4mm thicker than the blade, which seems to show I need to thin either the awl (1.8mm) or the spacer (1mm) by this amount.

I made a try with the spacer and it got clear that I can't figure out how to do it by myself for lack of skills with tools. And I think thinning the awl would be better, since the spacer would have only 0.6mm in the end.

TL;DR: I'm too dumb to find a way to thin the awl. Can anyone point me out to instructions on how to do it?

I recently fit a 93mm awl into an 84mm.  I thinned it out on a 1x30 belt sander.  Went slow and sanded at different angles to keep it even.  I also shortened it some to fit, peened brass into the pivot hole and drilled new hole with 2.2mm drill bit, and reprofilled  the pivot area.

Thanks for the info. If you didn't have one (I don't), do you figure you could do it in some other way?

Maybe lay some sandpaper down and rub the awl back and forth a few million times.

Or you could do away with the spacer/key ring and find a washer/washers in the appropriate thickness.  I've done this on mods that have multiple blade layers.

Looks like I need more tools 😬
I guess the washer route could work but that's so less elegant...

Victorinox uses a washer next to the main blade on the Alox Cadets, it's not so bad.

I went ahead and used washers. I think it works well.
Thanks for the help!

I only used one 0.5mm washer for the large blade. It should be 0.4mm but I don't have one. You guys can see the back of the liner is a bit strange. That happened when I tried to put the titanium scales on. They bent the liner. I needed to file the pins rings a bit and then they fit. It's a bit ugly but I don't think it affects in any way.

One day when I have a belt sander, I think I'll open the knife and do it correctly. But I live in a flat and don't have much space so, it won't be so soon.

So nice.  I saw where the liner flared a little.  I don't think things are meant to be perfect.  Good work.  Best wishes.  G
