NOS SwissChamp Lovin’
on: March 23, 2025, 08:47:13 PM
Warning, Long intro  :o
So, a few years back, in 2018ish, i accidentally came across an article on “Art of Manliness” about the great old virtue of carrying a SAK with you, as always being prepared -
This led me to getting a Tinker for my birthday, as it had the toolset as my army issue Adventurer (HMAK) just more “civil” size - and a few months later I actually discovered a Climber with “ISS” (the Cleaning company) commercial scales which I have had since the 90’s and forgotten completely about.

These knives both bear a great sentimental value to me as they were gifted (I still use them every day), so I wanted something else as a working knife -
That meant coming to this forum and browsing all 560 pages of topics to catch all kinds of ideas, going through local stores and so on - It led up to buying a Tinker Deluxe, blue scales and green T&T+Pen -
This just didn’t make it “right” for me- being clunky and square-ish …!
Then I re-browsed the 560 pages here again, wanting this then that, and soon couldn’t decide one toolset from another -

After reading a thread about the “Swiss Tank” ( https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,89081.msg2329759.html#msg2329759) I decided to go all in for a SwissChamp - I started searching high and low for one, and came across a collector near me, who was selling out - not being a “collector” per se, I just opted for one of the knives that looked best, and received it last night!!
Having tucked the family in, I went on this forum and noticed the dating sticky, which hadn’t occurred to me, but being both an engineer and history buff it sounded strangely appealing, so I gave it a shot, and what I came to shocked me abit (though it is probably not very rare anyway) as it turned out to be older than me and the misses even -

This is what I came up with:
Stamp: ‘86-‘92
File: old one, v-cross, pre ‘90?
Hook: none, so before ‘91
Pliers version: added contour, 3mm but no groove, so a version 2, ‘87-‘90
Scissors: no groove, silver screw, bend at rest so ‘88-‘89

While I do realise that stock supply may last some time after production of each tool version, the markers that does it out for me is the scissors and hook and file, making it a 88/89/90 model?

Anyways, I am super stoked about this too great a tool and can’t wait to give it a go -
Maybe I’ll stick the original scales in a bag and put some Micarta scales on to make it more durable, but a part of me wants to buy another and display this one, or make it a home queen, thus now I have the full SAK bug too !!

If you read it all, thank you, and here are some pictures of the beast  >:D

I’m not a Swisschamp user, too big for me, but I do like those older ones. The scales are likely solid and not hollowed out, so should be a bit stronger.

Personally, I avoid shelf queens and say use it! Obviously a personal preference thing.

Welcome to MTO, looking forward to seeing how your SAK journey progresses

As you already know if you actually read awl the pages of MTo
As you indicated.

Nice find! :2tu:

Personally, I'd use that one very lightly, if at all. It's that nice. Luckily, used SwissChamps come up on eBay US pretty regularly. And it may be worth mentioning that I'm not aware of any Micarta SAK scales that include a slot for the pen. I would be okay with losing the pen, but many others like it.

Welcome aboard and congratulations on finding a real beauty!  The Swiss Champ is my favorite SAK, especially the older ones.  The Swiss Tank article is what really got me into the Swiss Champ.  I liked the way it was written, and got me into carrying mine more.  They seem large in comparison to the other SAKs, but they carry very well and literally have everything you need.  As it's been said before, if the Swiss Champ doesn't have it, you can make it with the Swiss Champ!  Looking forward to hearing more of your adventures!
Barry

Nice work on the dating BTW

I don't have one myself. My interests are elsewhere, but they are obviously really awesome SAK's, thats for sure.

Thanks a lot guys, and for your opinions and input
Been wanting to write something here for long, but not just any ol’ chattering

Actually I had a LM Blast 2005 model and used it for 10 years time, and probably abit much since some of the tools snapped off, big screwdriver and main blade (wasn’t even misusing it) but I always felt it was abit strange to use its secondary tools since it had to either be opened, tool deployed and the folded up, or left open in some crazy z shape to use the tools - but that’s just me

Hi Bjorn,
We live on chattering around here.  If most of us waited for something important to happen before we wrote a comment, nobody would write anything.  Just like a family dinner.  Papa talks about how his back hurts.  Mama complains about the dryer.  Aunt Gert talks about having her toe operated on.  Junior wants money to buy comic books.  Missy says nobody understands her and sends texts on her phone.  Chattering is the fuel that keeps this thing going.  Best wishes.  Gary

Spot on IMR. SAK chatter is very welcome. That's a nice example and like @Huntsman I used to think the SC was far too large for sensible use ... until I carried one on a challenge here and the penny dropped. For it's sheer density of tools it is outstanding and not some bulky lump either.

I'm with Farmer X on this too. This is such a nice example that getting another for grubbier jobs would make sense to me. But we all have different views and it makes this a more interesting place.

Congrats on your tool. The SC is a gem...not too big for me and I sometimes carry the XL version, for even more functionality. I would buy a user too and keep this one pristine. Look forward to reading more on your journey!

Ah true  :D that’s what makes it interesting just to lurk around, so it was mainly for my virgin post, now ofc I’ll let loose and give into SAK world!

Thanks! Yeah think it’s going to get used around the house and then one more, maybe a recent version, for work, with some crazy scales and hanger

I must say, the last few days I’ve carried the SC on a P7, and I feel it as little as my tinker, on my way through the door today I actually thought I had lost it

:iagree: They're very comfortable to carry.  Fir the toolset they have, they're very compact.  The Swiss Champ is my travel multi tool.  They're legal most everywhere, and I haven't run into anything they won't handle.

They are aftermarket :P Pizzini.at

Sadly I had them engraved, ‘cause I am actually parting with the Outrider as the use is limited

Ordinarily I'd be interested in the Outrider. But I may be relocating, and I have no desire to have an international shipment tied up in USPS purgatory. Good luck with the sale!

Really?   ???

The Outrider is one of the best SAKs - IMHO
All the features of Vics best selling Huntsman - But beefed up - Plus a cross-head screwdriver - And a locking blade.

... Or is the locking blade actually the problem - ie knife laws in your country

Great Swiss Champ. Almost 40 years old and it still looks new.  I would use it for sure.  The Champ carries very well in a front pocket when hung from a dangler.  Being wide it sits flat against your leg, and I find that more comfortable than some of the smaller SAKs.

That's an interesting point, Alan. On no informed basis whatsoever I have always told myself that these must be to big for pocket carry. What do you use as a dangler? Just the Vic chain, which must then be shortened, I imagine? :dunno:

My Carhartts have a "fifth pocket" that's deep, wide, and (as best as I can tell) perfectly rectangular. It swallows up even an Opinel No. 8. Guess I'm gonna have to get a SwissChamp and see how it rides in that pocket.

Paracord lanyards usually tied to right around 3 1/2 inches long with a small carabiner will perfectly suspend a SAK vertically, mid-pocket, when attached to the belt loop above the pocket so you won't even feel it.  I do this because I hate the feel of weight pressing against my leg from a heavy knife sitting horizontally in the bottom of my pocket.

They sure are! I generally wear the BN4200-M. If you don't need or want the cargo pockets, or you prefer a heavier fabric, I believe the BN2291-M has the same "fifth pocket." It may be worth noting that I live in hard-core Carhartt country and have two Carhartt stores within five miles of my house.
