Scissor snap (or lack of) on Alox SAK mod
on: April 07, 2025, 10:08:50 AM
I've been absent from the forum for a while just with other thing  going on but I've recently assembled an alox mod which is essentially a Carver XMS. 5 layers: 2 main blades, awl, pruner blade, scissors, metal saw and a combo tool from a GAK.

It looks cool but the scissor and combo layer are quick sticky when closing layer. Snap on opening is fine but closing they ares sluggish at best, sometimes not even closing at all.

I thought at first it might just be a couple of dodgy brass liners that I was using but even when I used original donor liners from another alox it's still a problem. Best I can manage is one working reasonably and one not.

It could perhaps be a knock on effect from some misalignment in the GAK layer as that needed some heavy modification to fit? Other thing may be that the spacer on the GAK blade layer which sits on an opener spring at present is a tiny bit shy of the width of the opener tools (about 3 thou thinner) is this enough to knock out the geometry and cause the problem this distinct?

Anyone else had this issue and solved it? Pics below in case they highlight any obvious faux pas!

In my experience, the scissor backspring is very strong and has a tendency to bend the middle pin (this may be the reason for the return of steel pins in the Pioneer X) resulting in a weak snap. If that's your case (if you take the knife apart, the pin/pivot should have a visible bend) you coud try using larger pins/pivots (3mm). Swapping the layers around may help too. Good luck
