Old auto wrench
on: March 19, 2025, 10:04:49 PM
I ran across this old auto wrench. Well covered with rust. Rust isn't worth much, so I took a few minutes and cleaned it up. Works as well as new. Best wishes. G   :)  [ You are not allowed to view this attachment ]

The world must be full of these things, Dan.  I just looked on E**y and saw a guzillion of them.  The seem to be all alike.  Very sturdy.  One seller said they were cast iron.  Baloney.  Best wishes.  G

Late edit:  I remember years ago an old timer told me that Ford A models came with these wrenches in a tool kit.  Maybe that is why there are so many around and all alike.  Best wishes.  G

When my father in law was building his house I found a couple old wrenches, like that, buried in the ground. Apparently, they were building on the spot of an old garage that had burnt down.
COVERED in rust, they took me quite a while to clean them up.  Gave one back to him and kept the other.

One thing I never figured out about these old wrenches is why they open up so far.  What sort of fitting could they possibly grip that would justify the three inch or so opening?  I would like to see a photo of friend PitCarver's wrench.  Best wishes.  Gary

Over the years I've acquired a bunch of these.  I probably have more than a half dozen here and there.  I've also give away a couple to a cousin who was a Ford Model A aficionado. The generic ones are pretty low in value if they have any at all, but when there's clearance they work well, and they open very wide.  Once upon a time they were pretty much standard for any automotive toolbox. For the opening size,  think of things like the big brass bearing caps that were once common on car front axles. A lot of old farm machinery, wagon wheel axles and the like, had huge square nuts.

The OEM Ford Model A wrenches were similar, but had a 1/2 inch square end on the handle for drain plugs. Ford tools will have the name in the familiar Ford script.

I don't really know how I came by that one.  I have an old auto tool kit somewhere.  Haven't seen it in years.  The part about the square nuts makes a lot of sense.  Best wishes.  Gary
