DMT Edge Sharp Pocket Sharp Plus
on: June 26, 2025, 12:55:48 AM
I picked up this new pocket sharpener a couple of weeks ago and I got some photos of it before I had a chance to use it.  Currently it is sitting in my Maverick and I may see it again someday but probably not any time soon.  Most of my sharpening needs are taken care of with either of the dog bone style sharpeners I have from Lansky or Gatco/Timberline, but I do like to experiment a little bit here and there.

I have probably more Lansky sharpeners than any other, but I also think very highly of DMT.  There was a time in the knife industry when, if you didn't have a DMT sharpener you were barely considered human.  Thankfully that mentality is long since gone, but it does echo how highly regarded the DMT line up is!

I am really looking forward to trying this one out, if for no other reason than it means I will have my truck back!

In the meantime, here are the photos.

Dang, I didn't realize those photos were so blurry!   :ahhh

Sorry about that!  I hope I sharpen knives better than I take pictures!   :ahhh

I'd like it better without you large bottle opener jutting out of the end. If I needed to attach it to a lanyard, I could use the whole and some cordage.

Yeah that bottle opener does seem excessive.

I had a similar thought when I first saw it.

I was going to get AI to write a review for this one for us, but then I remembered two things:

1- we don't do AI here.  Unlike so many other sites these days, everything at MTO is written by actual people who have actually used the item in question.

2- I already did the AI review bit.  https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,94062.0.html

I got some time to play wth this one today and I thought I'd take the screws out ad see if that oversized bottle opener could be removed.  I agree with Groucho's comment above and thought if I could take out the screws the bottle opener would just pop right out.

Unfortunately that doesn't appear to be the case.  I tried to pull on it and see if I could get it out but there was no luck.  I may try again sme time, but I am pretty sure the only way to get that bottle opener off is to cut it.

Use it as a keychain or get an S-biner in it to attach it to a belt loop or similar.

It already has a lanyard hole. Do all MT manufacturers believe all buyers are lushes?

Bottle openers are an interesting addition for sure.  In most cases they are pretty easy to design and produce, so they are a natural addition to any tool.

Also, while many bottle caps nowadays are twist off caps, that just lulls you into a false sense of confidence, and when you come across a bottle that doesn't.... Well that can a bit frustrating if you don't have an opener.

Usually I have several in my EDC since everything seems to have one so I'm rarely caught empty handed, but I will admit that there have been times over the years that I've been frustrated by not having a bottle or can opener at different times and I can see the value of them.
