Got the Art of Whittling in the post last week. For a 95 year old book it is in excellent condition, however it smells very musty. I currently have it in a cardboard box with some bicarb soda to try and dray the smell out. In terms of instructional, it is probably a bit more high level than detailed. It is still a very nice reference and inspiration for some of the things I haven't seen much elsewhere, like the scissors and pliers, chains balls in cages etc. Apparently more recent reprints may have improved instructions, so may even be worth getting hold of one as well.
It is also smaller than I thought it would be, but that's OK!

I got my copy of Whittling and Woodcarving by EJ Tangerman the other week. It is a modern reprint of the 1936 original. Would be nice if it was a bit bigger, or if the diagrams at least were a bit bigger. Lots more content than just the whittling side. It is laid out quite oddly, there are pictures and diagrams that don't have text related to them until several pages later, so you have to do a lot of flipping to read and refer. Will be a handy resource still, thanks for the recommendation, Dane  :salute:

It is Autumn here and we still have some nice weather where I can sit outside and do some whittling. I was trying to think of something I could use the small offcuts bits I got from the local speciality timbers supplier. One place I saw had small hearts and acorn pendants, but I wanted something befitting the local timber with a native item.
Given the season we are are in, our only native deciduous tree, endemic to Tasmania, the nothofagus gunnii (deciduous beech) is turning, with peak about 2 weeks ago. The leaves turn yellow and orange and red, and the brown leaves litter the ground. The leaves are also very small, oval shaped about 20mm long. Huon Pine is perfect for its yellow colour.

Beautiful whittling, Tazzie. And lovely tree and leaves.

Thanks so much, Dane! I didn't get to see it myself this year, it is an alpine plant and needs a bit of a hike to go see. Going to try for next year.

I have been doing more of these leaves for jewellery. My wife prefers smaller stud style earrings to larger dangly style, so I set myself the challenge of making suitably small examples from Tasmanian Myrtle and Huon Pine. Very pleased with how they turned out!
