Post apocalyptic Leatherman Super Tool
on: June 16, 2025, 03:38:14 AM
I found this 1997 supertool buried in the stream bed. All the cutting tools were shot.

I added a scalpel blade by cutting the scalpel handle with the leatherman file. I had to heat it in the forge and hammer on it to make it a little wider.  I drilled the pivot hole with an egg beater drill and fit the scalpel handle with a file.

The scalpel was fairly easy to add, but doesn't carve wood well. So I made a blade from a small file. I annealed it in my charcoal forge (which uses a foot pump for an inflatable boat to force air into the fire), filed it to shape by hand, drilled the pivot hole with a battery operated drill, then heat treated it in my forge. The knife blade took me about 3 hours to make.

I made an awl from the tang of the file and a wood saw blade from a sawzall blade I found. For these I used power tools.

I have used this supertool to carve a friction fire set, feather sticks, a chess set, clean fish, fix a white gas stove...

One thing that is cool about the carbon steel blade is that it can be used for flint and steel.

I bet you had a lot of fun working on this old Leatherman.  What did you make the nail nick for the blade with?  A chisel, maybe?  Best wishes.  G

Thanks all.  I had always thought that these tools were held together by some kind of rivet.  Now that I know they can be disassembled I have been going down a deep multi tool rabbit hole. I have found a lot of great information in this forum.

This project has been fun. I didn't think I would need the nail nick since I can usually get the longer tools out by pressing on their sides. So I didn't add the nick initially. That was a mistake because the knife blade still has some file teeth and they drag when opening it. Since the blade was already hardened the only way I could think to add it was with a cut off wheel in a Dremel. But a chisel would have been a good way to do it when it was still hot.

Good catch. Forging bear foot is not recommended.

Here is the awl I made from the tang of the file. I made it shorter than I should have.

I made 3 saws before I got one that worked ok. The first was made from a hacksaw blade, but there wasn't enough material around the pivot to lock up. The second one was made from an Allway keyhole saw blade but they are push to cut and there isn't much supporting the tang for that much force. The last one was a sawzall blade and that worked good, but not as well as a Leatherman saw blade.

I made the saw blade (and other tools) by clamping a LM tool to the blade with a vice grip, drilling a hole for the pivot, then leaving the drill bit in the hole while I filed the part to shape. That kept  the LM part from moving around.

I will make a belt sheath next

Cool project, and loved seeing the Chess set. My toes are nervous for your toes, though.

Seahunter, great save on the Super Tool. It is always fun to see a forgotten tool brought back to life. I really liked seeing you ingenuity in making the replacement tools.  :tu: :like: :like: :like:
