OC Pioneer with Black Scales?
on: August 22, 2025, 08:31:52 PM
Here is a nice Old Cross Pioneer that recently sold on eBay Germany.   It has a big-V VSSR tang stamp and nickel-silver liner which would indicate later production within the Old Cross run.  If it were red I wouldn't have thought twice about it, but it's black.  I have searched and looked and checked SAK Wiki but can't find any info.  Anybody know anything about this knife?  It got a lot of attention and sold for close to $450.

I know, right?   I found one older thread on Reddit, but it didn't have any pictures.    I'm really hoping someone on MTO knows more about this knife, which I think I will call the Also Black Beauty.

I’m sure I’ve seen one before, but my search skills are failing me in turning up anything.

@gustophersmob, perhaps you were thinking of the black Old Cross Farmer with Route 66 logo?    I found this picture on SAKWiki, after conferring with a pen pal in Spain who is an accomplished Alox collector.  I now believe that this black Old Cross Pioneer dates to 2011-2012 but that it never appeared in Victorinox's catalog.

Here is the Route 66 Farmer.   The picture comes from SAKWiki, although I am unsure to whom I should give credit for the photo.

Maybe, but I’m pretty sure I remember seeing a black old cross pioneer without the engraving panel.   It is possible I’m just confused.

There’s also the Ted Nugent farmer similar to the rt 66 one; black, old cross, with Ted nugent in the front engraving panel.

Found it!

This is what I remember:
https://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,70895.msg1431808.html#msg1431808

Unfortunately it’s light in details, but Mr Whippy stated it may have been a special run for an Italian retailer.

I also found this more recent thread, similarly light on details:

Oh my goodness, I even replied to the 2nd, later, thread and still didn't remember seeing one of these!  And that was barely only two years ago.

Through further chat with my Alox collector friends in Europe (who sadly aren't on MTO) it seems these were made in 2011 in very limited quantities and sold only at the factory shop in Ibach.  Other models that were made with these old cross scales at the same time were the aforementioned Route 66 Farmer, Swiss Rail Technician, and a Pioneer for the firefighters  in Dreispitz (which I think is a region of Zürich, but I'm not sure).

Can we update the SAKWiki to reflect this info (so idiots with failing memories like me have it written down somewhere)?

I actually have one of these coming, and would be happy to provide pictures, although mine is not nearly as pristine as the one I started the thread with.
