Buck user in the House
on: October 04, 2025, 01:21:32 AM
I don't have just a whole bunch of traditional folders anymore.  Last time I had the surprise box, I saw a mid-sized trapper.  Wood burl handles.  Looked quite unused.  I nabbed it.
Little Buck 382.  Can't even feel it in your pocket.  I have had a bunch of Buck knives through the years.  Not a big bunch by MTo standards.  An MTo bunch means that the floors of your house sag from the weight of them.
First Buck I ever handled was one my school pal Bruce had.  It was a full-size stockman.  His cousin Daniel sharpened all his knives for him.  Bruce would take out his Buck at morning break and pull a hair out of his head for a demonstration.  Then he would pop the hair in two with his knife.  It is perhaps well to point out that friend Bruce had rather short hair.
One fateful day, Bruce plucked out a hair and proceeded with his daily demonstration of Cousin Daniel's sharpening abilities.  Took a little whack at the hair and missed.  Missed the hair anyway.  He did catch his thumb, and the thumbnail prevented a partial amputation.  Blood flew everywhere.  He spent the rest of the day with his thumb bound up in a turban of hankie.
This was the same Bruce I remembered from grade school who squirted blood from a head wound.  He decided to stab holes in a box with his pencil in an attempt to ease fourth grade boredom.  He applied himself to his temporary pastime with vigor.  Stabbing holes with a pencil.  He decided to make one final mighty stab and caught his ear on the downstroke.  He really wasn't overly concerned with his personal damage after either asinine bloodletting but took his pain in stride.  After all he was the youngest of six in his family.  The only boy with five older sisters.  I recall he came to school with a bandage on his head once after one of his sisters broke a guitar over his noggin.
Anyway, I decided to carry my cute Buck for a while and use it for whatever came up.  No, I haven't popped any hairs in two or used it to stab holes in a box.  Yet.  Might have to apply for a Buck User's badge?
Best wishes, Gary

Macaroni package was no obstacle.  Nor was the mail.  The little Buck came quite sharp.  The back scale shows a flaw in the wood.  A separation following the grain.  It isn't loose, so I am not concerned with it at all.   The liners are steel, and the bolsters are nickel silver or whatever passes for that in China.
There is one little problem that I just noticed yesterday.  I will post a photo.  The spay blade has a crack in it.  I will show a photo.  It is about 1.5mm long and goes all the way through.  Again, not a concern.  I could always ship it to Buck if the blade breaks off.  Or continue using it as a one blade trapper, I suppose.  I am sure the donor never saw the flaw.  I like the knife as well as ever.  I will post a photo of that.
I did some work outside.  I also clawed some leaves and muck out of the gutters with my hand.  Got my hands nice and filthy.  I used the Buck to clean fingernails.  Nice.

I walked by the dairy section of Food Lion yestiddy.  Took a deep breath and decided to buy some eggs.  First I have bought in some time.  I used the little Buck to slice some of Food Lion's good cheddar for some cheesy eggs.  Nice breakfast.  Yummers.  Then I used the Buck to open a bag of mini donuts that had an improperly glued bag.  Must have been a new employee at the Little Debby plant.  Chocolate dipped mini donuts were just fine.  Best wishes.  G

Very nice wood on that 382.  There's been a lot of good stuff in the surprise box.

It is attractive, Alan.  Also, very light.  I don't know much about how it will hold an edge.  I hear that the blades are soft, but that doesn't bother me much.  The knife is large enough to be useful.  I have enjoyed carrying it so far.  Best wishes.  Gary

Buck makes a fine trad folder. I don't like to say it out loud, but it's possible I like my Buck Stockman more than my Case ones...

That's a good-looking little Buck. I should take a photo or two of those I kept. Congratulations on your badge!

I just noticed the badge.  Woo hoo!  I'm not exactly thrilled with the little crack in the spey blade, but I'm content to live with it.  At least as long as it doesn't break off.  That was one of the good things about a trapper.  Use one blade, and if it gets dull, you can always switch blades and keep going.  Break one?  You still have a functioning knife.  Two long blades.
My knife dealer buddy had all sorts of Benchmade and Paragon and other knives.  I swapped him an Uncle Henry trapper.  Some time later, he slid out his carry knife to use on something.  The Uncle Henry trapper.  He said it was just perfect.
Anybody feel like posting a photo on this thread?  Jump right in.  Or start your own thread and see if you can get one more badge, if you don't have one already.
I spelled spey and spay two different ways.  Although spey blade seems to be the accepted spelling for something that might be used to spay something.  Let's call it a skinning blade instead.  Goes more with the outdoor stuff.  The clip point on this trapper would be perfect as an 'opening blade' while skinning.  Nice and thin and pointy.  Great blade set.
Best wishes.  G

Clock worked for a while, then stopped.  I tried two different batteries.  A goofball local radio announcer used to call a swear word a 'hecky darn'.  Last functioning clock in the house.  Smurf.

Didn't notice that crack before.  Buck will fix it if you send it to them.

I had the pretty thing for several months and never noticed it.  I was doing a paper cut test and noticed it dragged or something.  I felt it with a nail and then used a magnifying glass.  Not a concern.  If I had bought the thing at Walmart, I probably would take it back.  Of course, I got it for free out of the Surprise Box and have either nothing in it, or possibly some portion of the $19.15 postage if I were to be picky about it.
Either way it is a very small bother.  I kept some other stuff out of the box anyway and had fun piddling with things in there.  Jacket weather is almost here.  I might go back to carrying an Opinel anyway, or maybe a Leatherman.  Would I ship it back to Buck if the blade broke off?  Probably.  Not there yet.  It isn't perfect, but I like it now regardless.
Best wishes.
G

That's a good looking knife Gary.  I like my little Buck canoe though I don't carry it as often as I should.

May the best of your past, be the worst of your future.

Very nice knives. I think I'm going to invest in brass, copper and wood, for a nice festive carry. It's been decades since I had a classic gents' pocket knife.

These little Bucks are sold here at a giveaway price by Walmart around Christmas.  You generally get a couple of them for $25 in a gift set.  They are nice knives.  I got this one out of the Surprise Box.  You can read about the US box and the EU box in The Break Room board.  Might give you an idea?   Best wishes,  Gary

I see the small Bucks are China made. I'm thinking American made, 110 or Ranger. Been wanting a knife in that style forever.
