Day 13

Nothing but 507 notices this morning.  Maybe I can get a post done.  Somehow I would have bet money that WECSOG would know all about Willys vehicles and probably own one.  I might have bet that Barry was in that club sometime in the past as well.  My old uncle liked the Willy wagons.  Puny little motor in a large bodied wagon.  Front and back seating with an area in the back which usually had a dog or two in it.  He had a 48 model, I think but updated to a 1950 since it came with a heater.  Anything past about 35mph felt like the thing was shaking itself apart.  The roar of road noise and pipsqueak motor combined to make shouting instructions to my old uncle a necessity.  He had to be one of the worst drivers I have ever seen.  Part of that may have been because his driving brain was remotely stored in his front seat passenger.  My aunt.  She screeched and screamed and held on for dear life when she traveled with him.  "Stinker, you're running out of the road!"  "Stinker, you missed the turn!"  Uncle Stinker drove until he was 94 and ran into the back of another car at a stop sign.  He would have tried to get his license renewed for another 6 years, but the judge made him turn them in.  "What are you going to do, Rob?  Drive until you are 100?"  That was the little speech before the turning in of the license.
I hear the birds singing this morning.  About 28F outside.  Maybe they are singing to loosen up something that was frozen last night.  Might as well post a photo.  Keep your fingers crossed.  Best wishes.  G

I really like those Willys wagons, Gary. And the similar pickup trucks too. Your uncle's wagon probably had the little F-134 4 cylinder engine. The early ones had that, but the later ones offered the "Super Hurricane" six cylinder as an option. Those had a lot more power. The pickup trucks had that as an option too, but they are really rare because most buyers of the pickup bought them as a work truck and were fine with the 4 cylinder.

I had both a Willys Wagon and pickup for awhile, both 4 wheel drive. My wagon had a Ford 289 V8 in it, which was a common swap. JC Whitney sold an adapter to bolt the 289 to the original 3 speed transmission. I really liked that wagon and wish I still had it. My truck came to me without an engine, and I traded both the wagon and truck for a CJ2A and some other stuff before I ever got around to fixing the truck.

I remember a prospector/desert bum had a blog in the late '90s about his Willys 4x4 pickup. He had a Japanese 4x4 truck for his desert excursions, and it kept breaking down. So he bought this old Willys, rebuilt its 4 cylinder engine and whatever else it needed, and used it as his desert rambling truck that wouldn't let him down. Interesting blog.

Opened a large box from Harbor Freight containing some hardware and electrical items as well as several tarps. We awlways have need of tarps around the base camp.

Just caught up on several days of postings.

Yes, 507 errors every morning for maybe a week. I was suspecting a hacker was attempting a denial of service attack as it was very random for a few hours.

About the keeps or WILLYS.
When I was maybe 10 or 11, mid 60s, a couple of brothers working the farm ordered an army surplus crated jeep from a comic book ad.
It arrived about 6 weeks later, about 6 crates total!   Looked like it was fresh from a factory, but never shipped overseas. Packed in thick grease and parts wrapped in a wax like paper that had disintegrated, that required more work cleaning than assembly.  Tires were dry rotted and first shipment included two engines (4cyl).
Before completing the assembly they or their dad and uncle ordered two more.   Awl three were assembled, and ran, like modern day side by sides.  Tires I remember were odd sizes so the used other rims and common snow tires.  Seats were as basic as they come.

The next summer, three more crates arrived, but only recall one, maybe two being build.  Knew extra parts always arrived, engine, transmission, seat, steering wheel awl were stored in the barn.

Then the farmer we worked for passed away in mid nineties.   He lived a full life, and I was blessed to had shared my four kids with him when visiting home, and allowed him to always show kids how milk was obtained from his cow.  He always sprayed one or two in the face,

Any who, the property was donated to the local nature center. North of KALAMAZOO.

The barn and house were donated to the township fire department for practice burns. If they removed the debris.

Emptying the grain bin under the hey mound revealed the last Willy’s crate kit, still in the crates.  It was a big deal locally.

The kit was auctioned off and brought in over $7,000 iirc.
That was the last I heard.

My mom’s house, we sold last year this time, set just east of the farm stead, and I could tell you the location of the barn and house and walk off each field. The lane to the back pasture and pond are now hiking trails maintained by the KNC!

The same trail those kits cars drove and were test driven.

Surpriced none of us were not killed racing them around the farm.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

My only WILLYS story is that I worked a car show one morning. I was in charge of the Jeeps. We had about a dozen modern ones, and one WILLYS, which promptly got all the attention.

Wow!

How neat is that!

Could you flip me PM where you sourced this from, please, or a link here if easier.

Would make great graduation gifts to my young grandsons making their way into the world.

I have two graduating this year,(spring), both entering first responder career fields!  One law enforcement the other EMT/Advance/Paramedic/Fire.

I just got it on the bay. Price per unit was higher, but I only needed one...

The one in the pic is the first (larger) link Gary posted. I was given the smaller and keep itin my wallet (the smaller size is easier for that). Dad liked it so much he almost swiped it, but I thought he'd prefer the larger since it's more like his other challenge coins.

And, Gary, appreciate the links.

Shouldn’t you be a ROTARIAN to gift the challenge this coin? (Properly)

With all this talk of Jeeps I feel like I've missed out! Never drove one of those but I did drive an Уаз 469/3151 — the Soviet version of a Jeep when I was in high school. It belonged to a friend. It was terrifying. Taking corners at 30 km/h I thought we were gonna roll over...

I never drove or rode in a jeep either.

All my military vehicle experience was either on water or in air.

Those are neat vehicles too; very similar mechanically to jeeps.  :like:

My first introduction to a real jeep (real as opposed to modern Jeeps or what I call JINO: Jeep In Name Only) was when I was just a kid of maybe 7 or 8, I rode in my uncle's old flatfender Willys. My uncle was driving, my Dad was in the passenger seat and I was sitting on one of the wheelwells behind them. We were going down a backroad when suddenly my uncle stopped, shifted into 4wd low range and went straight up the steep bank beside the road, pushing down saplings as we went into the woods. At that moment I became a jeep fan for life.

Day 13:

This is delayed from yesterday. I was getting insufficient storage errors when it tried to post, then forgot to come back and post it later.

Anyway, stropping the soldier.

Day 14

I just noticed that today is Friday 13th.  I was going to make a trip to the store today, but there's no way I am chancing it now.  Werecoyote knew what day it was, come to think of it.  He gathered his cohorts into the yard next to my bedroom window this morning.  Maybe about 1AM.  They howled, screeched, and gibbered like fiends.
Just finished watching the EDC-TV spot this morning.  New Gerber items and Kizer.  I mentioned losing my Kizer and finally finding it after a lengthy search.  I finally found my pocket comb last week.  I lost that probably three years ago.  I always meant to buy a new one, but somehow the thought never came to me when I was at some place like Dollar Tree.
Obligatory GAK photo.  The month (and challenge for me) is almost half over.  Best wishes.  Gary

Day 13 (catching up)

I suspect I'll be doing a lot of catching up, with an unconventional work schedule looming. But yesterday I used the can opener's tip as a fingernail cleaner. It got the job done.

Wow, that looks tasty. I'm not a big alcohol guy but I do love me a Maraschino cherry! Julia and I went on a Valentine's day tour of the water treatment facility in town here. It was actually tremendous fun. Apparently 'flushable wipe' doesn't mean 'able-to-be-disintegrated-in-water' and therefore they seriously clog up the works at that treatment facility. But yeah, it was a great time! We even got some goodies, including this compost. I'd definitely go again.

Day 15

Just enough battery power to take a photo of an After Dark Snacker.  There were several different rackos.  One was hobbling around on three feet.  Probably got bit during a brawl.  This was a big one.  Like a thug in an old movie, "Ya shudda seen da udder guy."
Probably go out later.  Ran out of anything to make sandwiches.  Maybe W-Mart will have some ersatz Pop Tarts.  I don't want any more of the choco chunk or fake oreo kind.  The pastry part of those things are like a chocolate wafer.  The filler is a little blech.  I wish W-Mart would contract for some with blueberry flavored jelly inside.  Mmmm.
    Best wishes.  G

I see a woman who until recently lived near me.  Everytime I saw her she would be complaining about deer.  Deer in the road.  Deer in her garden.  Almost hitting one with a vehicle.  Finally she moved.  I saw her the other day.  She asked me if the deer were still around the old neighborhood.  I said yes.  Then she said there didn't seem to be any deer where she was.  She informed me with a frown that there were bears instead.  Just can't please some folks.  Best wishes.  G
