Got some Bear Jaws on ebay. Three different models, one Craftsman rebrand, one standard, and one Sportsman. The Bear Jaws were some of the first tools on the market with all outside opening implements. Vic bought them for awhile when they were developing the Swisstool, and they Bear manufactured them in many variants and for different brandings.
All of them have room for 3 short and 2 long tools per side. Besides the XTRA THICC Phillips, they're all the same thickness, and the non-security Torx screws were designed to make them easy to swap in and out, somewhat similar to what SOG still does today.
All three contain combo head pliers with wirecutters, a Phillp's driver, a medium and large flathead, and a Gerber-esque lanyard loop.
Each contains at least one knife blade out of: PE clip point, Serrated sheepsfoot, Combo clip point.
The remaining tools are:
Sportsman (combo blade): Saw, can opener, small flathead
Craftsman (PE Clip): Awl, file, and can opener
Original (PE and Sheep) Can opener and file
Construction is pretty simple, but they're comfortable to use and fairly light. No lock, but a pretty solid detent.
My plan is to take them apart, swap some tools around, make a combination that works for me. The files on both my examples are fairly poor, so I'll drop them, along with the ever awkward/pointless lanyard loop.
That'd give me something like:
1: Can opener
2,3,4: Phillips
5: Saw
6: Blade
7: Flathead
8: Awl
9: Flathead
10: ?
Not sure how many flatheads I really need. If I want to keep all three, I'll probably put in the combo blade. Otherwise, PE and Sheepsfoot and two flats.
Anyway, before I take them apart, I figured I'd double check to see if anyone needed anything checked on them. Not really rare, but they are out of production.
