What full-size models have scissors and nail file?
on: December 17, 2025, 06:31:16 PM
Just wondering, are the Compact and Companion the only full-size, current production knives with both scissors and a nail file?

Not quite.

While new, my understanding is that the Synergy X Alox is part of the regular product line, not some special run or limited edition.

Also, if one recognizes that the file portion of the metal saw/file works just fine for filing fingernails (and I can say from personal experience that this is the case, though it is more aggressive than the typical dedicated nail file), then the list should include the Mountaineer, Swisschamp, Handyman, Ranger, Work Champ, etc.

I know not full size, yet the SPORTSMAN and EVO 14 could fill this catagory nicely.
If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Here’s a link to info on the nail file with some models, I have three customs and each I made sure had both, my edc sak is a FarmerX, yeah no nail file but it’s got the scissors and large, and I carry a mini sak on my keys, so that’s got the nail file, yet also a mini pair of scissors,, yet I think one of our customizers took a nail file and shaped it so both ends were the same and tapped it to the side of the alox, I have a spare nail file and think it would be great to do the same to my FarmerX, but I don’t have a tap set, so I thought of how I bought pocket clips which had 3M double face tape, I carried them for a good 4yrs and when I took the clips off it took a good 10min just to get the clip off, so why not do the same using the tape, yet I go to find my roll and then forgot I used the last of it on a project like 3month ago, like uhhh! So there’s another idea,, heck use a fancy nail file, heck if on a plastic scales and if skateboard deck tape is right roughness, you’d only need like what 3” and you’d have like what 20-40 pieces, lol,,

Thanks! I completely forgot about the Synergy X

I'm more interested in the nail file rather than the metal file, though I appreciate the info.

Evo 14 is great, but it’s deleted and at least in the UK and Europe, not so easy to find.

Still showing in stock on the big river site here in the US, but I agree that if anyone wants one, they should get it now.

The only "full-size SAK" I own that has both is the Evo 23. It is kinda bulky, though...it's up to you to determine if the magnifier and saw justify the bulk.

Thanks guys, the wengers are good suggestions that I had forgotten about.

Does anyone know if the more recent Vic delemont versions have the weaker back springs like wenger used to have, or are they a a bit stronger like Vic’s offerings?

You need a Synergy X, or you could build a Voyageur mod, or don't forget that a Compact has the nail file surface on the back.

The EVO14 I have seems just as sturdy as the other VICs I own.

As I understand the VICTORINOX continued production of the EVOs in the same DELEMONT factory as the WENGERS.  Just with the Victorinox branding and I suspect their steel as WENGERS sources were updated.

That's interesting. I think it's a great model and I'm glad to have mine. As you say, anyone interested should grab one while they can. If it doesn't turn out to be a keeper you can probably sell it at a profit later, when there are none to be found.

The UK Amazon site only has a few Evo models left: 23, S17 and the 10 in three varieties (plain. EvoGrip and wood).

(Image removed from quote.)

Thanks!  I didn't like the pioneer X as it became just too "brick like" over the regular pioneer for me, so I'm guessing the Synergy X would be the same.  A Cadet X would be amazing, but just don't have the funds to pursue 84mm scissors, or a pre-built mod at the moment.

In theory a Voyageur or Compact would be ideal, but I just don't like the combo-tool.

I managed to reconcile my love of Alox, requirement for scissors, and lack of tolerance for thick knives by dual-carrying the Companion X Alox (93mm scissors only) and an Alox Cadet. They sit on left and right sides of a small pocket pouch. May not work for you of course.

My Evo 23 is Victorinox-made, and its backsprings are typical Victorinox..

In case it might be helpful, I made some notes on dual-carry options when I was trying to optimise my pocket carry:

Scissor side: Companion X Alox (scissors only) - 93mm / 10mm / 44g. Second SAK needs opener layer:

Alox Cadet. Blade / file / openers. 84mm / 8mm / 46g (pair: 90g)
Pioneer. Blade / awl / openers. 93mm / 12mm / 71g (pair: 115g)
Sportsman. Blade / file / openers / corkscrew / awl / toothpick / tweezers / eyeglass screwdriver / pin. 84mm / 15mm / 52g (pair: 96g)
Spartan. Blade / small blade / openers / corkscrew / awl / toothpick / tweezers / eyeglass screwdriver / pin. 91mm / 14mm.  But Spartan doesn't seem any thinner than the Sportsman (thicknesses are from Vic web site, I did not measure them).

Alox Cadet and Sportsman are the winners from the above. Both when combined with the Companion X Alox weigh little more than single carry Climber or Pioneer X, but are more pocketable.

Scissor side: Companion Slim Alox (scissors / bottle opener / box cutter) - 93mm / 12mm / 67g. Second SAK doesn't need any openers, only blade is essential:

Swiss Army 1. Blade. 93mm / 9mm / 44g (pair: 111g)
Swiss Army 2. Blade, small blade. 93mm / 9mm / 48g (pair: 115g)
Electrician. Blade, small blade, bottle opener. 93mm / 12mm / 69g (pair: 136g)
Bantam (cellidor). Blade, combo tool. 84mm / 11mm / 33g (pair 100g)
Bantam (alox). Blade, combo tool. 84mm / 6mm / 29g (pair: 96g)

Swiss Army 2 and Alox Bantam are the winners from this list.

Comparison with single carry:

Climber. 91mm / 18mm / 82g
Pioneer X. 93mm / 15mm / 94g

Interesting observations. I could add that if one goes with the Companion Slim and further weight reduction is desirable, an Opinel or similarly light dedicated knife would serve very well.

Very true. Sometimes my love of SAKs blinds me to alternatives that may well work better.

It may be possible to lighten an SAK by replacing the scales and liners with a material that's light but strong enough to serve both functions. However, I don't place such an extreme priority on trimming off a few grams.
