Wire cutters
on: January 26, 2026, 10:06:42 PM
Does anyone prefer and choose to carry a tool with the old integrated cutters over the replaceable ones.

I don’t really have reason to cut any wire and would not expect or use my multitool to cut my way through a chain link fence unless my life depended on it.

Would the replaceable cutters shatter before you would damage an integrated one anyway. Obviously it would be easier to replace if you did.

But unlike some people you occasionally come across who claim to of broken every multitool they’ve owned and then blame the tools  I do not overestimate any tools capabilities and if I was ever to snap a blade, driver or plier head, it would not come as a surprise and I would probably have been doing something I knew was risky and would have to have been very important for me to do do.

My trouble is i never show initiative, but that's only because no one has told me to.

My dedicated tools, needle nose pliers and diagonals are integrated design.  And have never failed me.

My LM most used for work was either ST300 or a REBAR.  BUT not really used to cut wire.

I did use ST3 to cut a calf free from some barb wire and a goat tangled up in some green rectangle style fence you put around a garden of line a split rail yard fence.

The ST and Rebar worked just fine as that style of fence use a soft wire

Known guys that have used WAVE to cut chainlink type fence for a variety of reasons.

The replaceable style cutters on LM are by pass cutters.

Integrated styles are meet if almost meet style cutters, (the edges do more a squeeze and thin type cut.

If I start and end the day above ground, it is a good day!

Hope yours is as good!

I consider the cutters on all my leatherman as by pass cutters. I think my gerber suspension has cutters that meet.

I no longer have a dog, but when I did finding an animal entangled in some sort of wire fencing while walking him was a scenario I considered but never happened to me..

I have LMs with bypass and with cutters that (almost) meet.  Last time I tried to cut a power cord with a LM integral bypass cutter, the wire ended up partially cut with enough wire wedged between the cutters to lock the jaws together.  I pried them apart with a screwdriver, since you can't pull on the handles of a LM to open the jaws back up once they are jammed.  Def told me I needed a SOG.
I would hate to have to cut barbed wire with LM bypass cutters (Kick, Bond) or with the non-bypass cutters (Wingman).  Likewise chain-link fencing.  Last barbed wire cutting was when I loaned my tree man a big ViseGrip with integral cutters that meet.  That was pretty tough with the ancient thick gauge barbed wire on the property.  Would a heavy-duty LM like a SuperTool with replaceable cutters have cut through?  Probably.  Just a guess.
It would be interesting to see someone do a series of experiments with different sorts of common wire.  Coat hanger, chain link, barbed wire, etc.
Best wishes.  G

I have had the same issue with the plier head jamming up when cutting electrical wire, the replaceable cutters are definitely much better for such wire.
Aswell as this I think the replaceable cutters probably save Leatherman a great deal in not having to replace plier heads under warranty through people trying to cut stuff they clearly were never meant to cut.

That said I have heard tim Leatherman used to cut nails to demonstrate the original cutters.
