Pretty certain that the Trail Guide only had the older style files.  Here’s a pic of mine. I think I have all of the Marlboro Vics.

My needs are simple:

Climber Small
Voyageur
Pocket Tool Chest stainless steel
Wenger Nature Series (all)
Minathor

There’s lots of other things I would like to get, and probably will at some point, but that don’t seem bucket list worthy because I could buy them tomorrow if I really wanted to. Barring improbable luck I will never get any of the listed items, because even if I could find them and money was abundant there is something in me that would just baulk at spending hundreds of pounds on any SAK. Not particularly logical, but it’s the way I am.

I don’t think there’s ever that perfect sak, unless it’s customized, it’s like trail mix, there’s always that one ingredient that you’ll live with cause the rest is perfect, or you’ll find one but it could really use just one more to make it perfect,, my edc is a FarmerX, but it’s missing the Philips and nail file, two of the least used, but still, now I took a compact and replaced the corkscrew with a Philips, and added a saw, the hook even has a nail file, so it’s got the tools, but it’s only a 91 and not alox,, the only one that nails the tool perfect is the wenger handyman, but again we’re dropping down to a 85, that and I’m not to fond of Werner’s, so the only perfect is going to be custom,,

Even custom, I don’t think perfect exists.  For example, I might start with a Climber with the nail file hook, but the pliers are also handy, and I’d really like to add the inline Phillips/mag glass layer, but then I’m up to five layers, which is really thicker than I’d like…

And metal scales are nice for durability, but not so nice for weight…

I completely agree with the trail mix analogy. That makes a lot of sense. Honestly, aside from its weight, the Swisschamp kind of is my perfect model. If the XLT were a bit thinner or a bit lighter I'd actually prefer that. Possibly an XLT without the Philips/Mag layer would be perfect for me, but even that's probably too thick.

Here are my fav three, my everyday carry is that FarmerX, it has ever since it came out, so what 4yrs ago, as you can see it’s not pocket carry, now those other two are custom, yet there literally the same knife but plastic vs alox, and of course the one outweighs the other by like what double? Yet tech has more tools, it’s the name of the game (tech the forum) it’s got the newer bottle/can opener, so that combines the two and takes off a layer, it’s the same with trail mix, you gotta have peanuts, plus you gotta have something chocolate, so why not combined the two, chocolate dipped peanuts? Thus your getting both but in one, same with the hook, yeah it’s something I really don’t need but could come in handy, and it also has the nail file, yes it’s not the best but works, so again to the trail mix, gotta have pretzels, and you need something with a kick, so rather the just plain pretzels and something else, get the honey mustard and onion pretzels, thus another two in one, so by dropping the alox scales I cut the weight in half, and by combining tools I ditch a whole two layers yet still have the tools I require there just not individual tools but multi,, yet by carrying the FarmerX I get the “must have” tools, with that little 2mm extra which I think makes a heck of a diff, but yeah, I lose out on the nail file and Philips, yet that mini screwdriver work on Philips, if not you prob shouldn’t be using it in the first place and using a real screwdriver, as for the nail file, one mod that was made was taking a nail file and making it even on both sides and tapping it the side of the alox scale, now I have a spare file, but no tap, but some one suggested double face tape, and it works cause I had the pocket clips taped to the side for over a year and it holds!

That bottom one is perfect, except I'd prefer rivets. All the tools I like. I do find the hook useful too, but can live without it.  If I could have that nail file on all my knives instead of a small blade, I'd use them a lot more.

Is there any way you could take a photo of what you mean with the file on the side of the SAK? I'm struggling a bit to visualise it.

Oh very cool, thank you for sharing. What do you mainly use it for? Nail file? Was it harvested from a Cadet vel. sim.?

I didn’t do it, someone else on here did the mod, but I want to do the same thing to the one above it, I just don’t have the equipment to do it, I wish I had some of that 3M double face tape, make the file the same as the one shown and then tape it, I’d only use it as a nail file,

It's definitely a very cool idea. To be honest half the reason I bought the Workchamp was for its huge file. It actually works extremely well for touch-ups on my axes. I was also wondering, if anyone knows, why the Trail Guide doesn't have the chisel on the back side of the file? I thought that was just standard practice: front side file = back side chisel.

I'm a simple man, just after a birth year Soldier (81) and Black beauty for shameless aesthetic admiring .
Oh and the winter magic cadet, I'd break the no safe queens rule for that one :D
Apart from that , I've been lucky enough to have collected enough to keep me happy :)

   I give up.  What's a Trail Guide?
Might as well answer the bucket list question.  Closest thing I ever had to a bucket list would have to be some goals that I had when I joined MTO.  I thought I might like to get a Leatherman (never had one), a SwissChamp (or Champion, I'm not picky), a 111mm and something alox.  Three of them came true.  No 111 yet.  One of our members had some for sale a couple of years back, but we couldn't get together on a deal somehow.  Mostly because of me.  My life is pretty good without one.  There is a Trekker at W-Mart for $68.  I think I will look at it just for chuckles.  Don;t really need it.  Best wishes.  G

Is the Black Beauty the one that was only available to the Swiss Railway workers or something like that? I've heard tell of this magical beast but I'm not sure I've ever seen one.

Gary, the trail guide is a Compact with an additional file/metal saw (but bizarrely no chisel on the back...) — it even came with plus scales and the eyeglass screwdriver. But they're somewhat freely available on the secondary market, so I may actually swap that one for a Tiffany & Co Swisschamp. It's a Swisschamp (my favourite model) with silver scales and a gold Victorinox logo; it's absolutely beautiful.

I always wanted a Mauser GAK and managed to pick up a near mint one at a show recently for a good price. Other than that I’d like a First Mate or anything with a crab claw awl, long nail file or even perhaps, more realistically cost wise, just a clip point pen blade. That green 93mm alox winter magic was one I wish I bought at the time too.

I envy you Vegemite Vikings; you have some of the nicest axes down there and they seem to go for a song... It took me a while to find a Forester in decent condition. And even then the toe was a bit crook (to borrow a word from your neck of the woods). This is like my grail axe, so I guess this is an appropriate thread as any to post.
