I was in Darwin back in 2004, and got the chance to try Vegemite in 2006. Let's just say I'll leave the Vegemite for others...

Oh, I can't stand the stuff. I'm almost convinced it's Oz's longest-running practical joke on the rest of the world... "Oh yeah, we love Vegemite, mmmm so tasty," all the while waiting for unsuspecting victims to try it...

The version we have in the UK, Marmite, is even worse. Properly vile. I love it.

You know what, I think I want to add one to my list: the Waiter Plus. Apparently (according to the wiki) there's a 91mm version of the Waiter that was sold with plus scales. There's even a photo of it on there. I think I started a thread about it years ago but couldn't find it when I looked just now.

The Master Craftsman, aka The Astronaut. It's the Ranger with the back Phillips instead of the corkscrew and was the model NASA acquired some of for the Space Shuttle program. It's been retired for around 20 years or so now.

Yeah, that's an awesome model... There's a version that was released by a Vic collectors' society that looks really cool but it was a very early model they released (2006). There's apparently also a blue cellidor Royal Netherlands Air Force version (maybe Reinier can chime in here).

Many seems to have the Scientist on their list. I - on my side have the 235k aka 84mm "small Climber" on mine.

I would trade one of the Scientists for a similar condition 235k/small Climber. The older the better.

The back row is cirka 1986 to 1991 and the front row 1991 up.

There was also a more recent version of the Space Shuttle one, for the Japanese market:

Yeah, I've been looking for one of these for a while... A few years ago there was one for sale on a large secondary market website for a very very good price, but I didn't jump on it and am kicking myself for that.

The Mother of All Scientist Collections!  You should give them names, like Edison, Tesla, Nobel, Linnaeus, Arrhenius, and Celsius. :)

:-) They are all darlings - maybe Nobel prize winners all of them...
It was a nice day - walking into that store in a small town here in Sweden and after asking nicely I got to check their Victorinox inventory. At first I did not grasp it fully and just bought two or three (do not remember) and some early Compacts too. The day after I came to my senses and went back and bought them all. The Scientists were no longer in the lists and I got them for what it said on the boxes. 220 Skr aprox 20 USD. The Compacts were a bit more but in all the lot average came to 267 Skr... They had all just been warming the shelfs for ages.

Scientists to the left and Compacts to the right.

That is so cool! I've had some luck doing that as well (but in the Netherlands). I found three or four SwissFlames and a 100th Anniversary SwissChamp that way. But never a Scientist :dd:

Oh and I saw at least two AutoTools in a small town in Canada but somehow I decided not to buy them  :twak:

I envy you guys; I hear stories about that all the time where someone finds something amazing like that in a store. The only time I had even a close experience was when I went to a camera store at a mall in San Diego and found a Spyderco Paramilitary 1 for a very good price. Almost nobody talks about the Paramilitary 1. I honestly can't quite even tell the difference between the Para 1 and 2.

Okay, so I'm actually kind of confused when it comes to the frontside file-backside chisel relationship. It turns out that the standard Mountaineer also doesn't have a backside chisel... The Mountaineer Lite has one, but not the standard Mountaineer... Does anyone have any thoughts on why that might be? I was thinking that it may be a space thing? But then I realised that the Ranger is even more 'cluttered' and yet has the backside chisel. Is it something to do with keeping costs down? Although, even that doesn't quite make sense because it would necessitate two different springs — one for the non-chisel files and one for the chisel files. I'm genuinely stumped here...

I've never understood that. Why doesn't a Huntsman have a chisel?
They even made a special display SAK with a non-existing tool config:

Oh that's bizarre... Interesting that they can fit a chisel where the fine screwdriver goes, but I guess they choose not to? The Mountaineer/Trail Guide lack of a back chisel is utterly bizarre to me and I'm trying to figure out exactly what's going on there. Best I can come up with is that they won't put the chisel in any model with fewer than five layers. The Ranger (five layers) has the chisel, and even the Mountaineer Lite (five layers) has a chisel, but not the standard Mountaineer... Also, Reinier, you know a lot about the military models; do you know what a tang stamp DE-GM 9305297 means?

CampFlame is four layers and has the small screwdriver. Chisel would make more sense :)

It's the German patent number for the liner lock mechanism if I remember correctly.

I wonder if the chisel needs a certain amount of beef around it in order to be properly supported?  Or it was believed that the “handle” had to be a certain size for the user to grip it properly and use it safely?

I thought maybe it had to do with which layers/tools could go next to which other layers/tools, but I’m not sure that theory holds up.

That's a good point — the 'beefiness' of the handle. It almost seems as though some lawyer came and said 'perhaps we'd get sued less if we put the chisel on a larger frame such that the user would be less likely to hurt themself' vel. sim. I'm adding a new model to my list (again). User jnoxyd took a photo of an insane-looking model called the Wenger Ueli Steck. I absolutely love it.

If that is the reason, why don't they add the small screwdriver?

That's a fair question. It might simply exceed their creative imagination. It seems like (display models notwithstanding) they only put chisels on the backside of the file. Your display models demonstrate that it definitely can be done. But for whatever reason they just won't do it. It could also be a cost-saving measure. In order to keep the costs of the Mountaineer down, they don't include the backside tool. And it's possible that they include the fine screwdriver on the Huntsman because the saw is cheaper to produce than the file, maybe?

An 84mm Golfer would probably kick all my other SAK’s out of rotation.

Funny, looking at the pic of the Giant in the 400+ collection thread, I’m reminded of my slide rules.  Just like how the larger SAK’s look really cool, and have a lot of functionality, the popular slide rules have lots of scales and capability.  I do have a couple of those.   But the SR i kept on my desk at work or my side table at home are pretty basic, they have the scales i use daily, and not much more.   Just like how my Sportsman or Compact have the tools i want daily.

It wasn't Algonquin Outfitters in Huntsville (Muskoka), Ontario, was it? That place for some reason had a bunch of extremely collectible models of a bunch of different companies that they'd sell.

No it wasn't! But that sounds like a nice place.

I'm pretty sure it was in Jasper but it may have been in Banff. I visited both towns again last year but could not find the store.

But I do have a picture from Spetember 2013 :)

Ah, very cool. There's some good skiing out there. So, I think my idea of the lack of the chisel on the Mountaineer being due to keeping cost down is likely correct. I noticed that the Victorinox walker, whilst having a saw, doesn't have a backside fine screwdriver. And I don't have a standard Huntsman (only the Huntsman Lites) but I don't think the standard Huntsman comes with the backside fine screwdriver either.
