Hard drive compatibility
on: January 30, 2026, 03:23:02 PM
My laptop (Dell Latitude 7480) recently experienced liquid intrusion. I've gone through all the steps except waiting for it to dry completely. Hopefully it will fire up after an extended drying-out period. But if it doesn't...

I'm hoping the hard drive will be salvageable. It's a Lite-On Technology CV1-8B512-HP. A quick search revealed little more than other such SSDs for sale, but did lead me to believe it is an HP part. In the event that I need a new laptop, I'm looking at others that use the same hard drive. Any suggestions for how to determine that are appreciated.

If laptop wasnt on when it happened it might be higher change to be usable after it dries up. if it wont turn on i suggest to take it to repair shop and they will tell is it usable or not and will hard drive be usable on another laptop

The laptop doesn't seem to have suffered any ill effects; I think its reluctance to power on was due more to being forcibly shut down than any liquid intrusion. I'll keep an eye on it, though. Thanks, Antti! :hatsoff:

As for putting it in a newer laptop, a quick search tells me it's a Connector Type: B+M Key

So technically, try to find a laptop that has an additional B+M key compatible slot, otherwise grab an external usb enclosure for it (I have a couple that cover the various types for this sort of situation).

if it's not bitlocked you should be able to mount and access the files both ways.

Unless you are buying an older replacement machine it probably won't give a whole lot to a new laptop other than the additional 512gb of storage.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

Though I managed to get the laptop up and going again, that could be useful in the future. Thanks! :hatsoff:
