For those of you who are not in the know, Canadian Tire is a big box department store chain in Canada that is a hardware store mixed in with an auto parts store/repair garage/gas bar.

In 1958, Canadian tire started to issue Canadian Tire money to customers. At first it was gas bar coupons but was extended to store purchases. You would get a certain amount back after spending so much. Folks would collect the money and save for a bigger purchase. If you had enough Canadian tire money, you could use it to buy something outright.

Before long, other businesses would accept Canadian Tire money for goods and/or services. The long running joke was that real Canadian money might lose value, but Canadian Tire money did not. The money was printed on real paper using printers that the Canadian Government used to print the real stuff.

I started collecting Canadian Tire money because it was always present in the house. It also fitted in with my coin collection. Little did I know that Canadian Tire would retire the money for the much cheaper electronic points system they now use. They also issued a few commemorative coins in years past. There is even an official Canadian Tire Coupon Club.

Lucky for me that I have been collecting for a couple of decades. There are many series issued over the years with many variations within. I sorted them out in series and then stack them inside my paper money binder. The main issue values range from 5 cent, 10 cent, 25 cent, 50 cent, 1 dollar, and 2 dollar for the  most part. Older coupons sometimes came in 2 and 3 cents values as well.

I didn't realize there were coins issued, that's pretty cool!

I recall when I was in Junior High I'd won $66 in Canadian Tire money for something- I don't recall what it was for, but I do recall getting a stack of $1 bills in Canadian Tire money, which at that age (both my age and the times!) was a fortune!

I ended up blowing most of it at the comic store which, as you said, accepted Canadian Tire money.

I'm happier with the points because they accumulate faster, I don't have to keep track of bills and I'm never stuck in line behind someone trying to count out $20 worth of five cent bills, but I definitely feel the same nostalgia as every other Canadian when I think about it.
