AI generated Leatherman ads
on: April 16, 2026, 01:05:04 PM
I have been seeing these things for quite some time now.  Anything I do a search for, or show any interest in generates a targeted ad.  Here is an example.
It is pretty safe to say that Leatherman doesn't provide the picture that goes with the sponsored link.  They might be a little out of touch with their customer base, but I am sure they know what they make.  Since I started this thread a minute or two ago, some AI demon roasting marshmallows over his pitchfork decided to send me ANOTHER L-man multitool ad.  This one is either a Gerber or some sort of Chinese semi-clone?  I can't tell.
Not just L-Man.  Yesterday I got an ad on my homepage for Kniveses.  That's right.  Artificial Ignorance has decided the new plural for sharp thingies is Kniveses.  Capital letter as well.
Maybe in some alternate universe Leatherman really does make that little folding bicycle Torx wrench tool?  We will know for sure when they allow 'Losers' to sign up for some in a raffle.  Then after that maybe they will start making them in multiple pastel color combos.  Names like Springtime Guacamole, Burnt Sienna Sunrise,  Montego Midnight Mystery.
Best wishes,
G

I do not think Leatherman will be pleased with this unauthorized shenanigans. Someone(s) heading for a kerfuffle!
A little Leatherman information.

I probably should mention that these ads appear on my default home page from Bing.  It isn't just L-man, but many other manufacturers of Kniveses.  Er,,,, knives.  Also they are not something I patched up.  Straight screenshot.  Best wishes.  G

I really, really hate AI.

Any time I see someone post “I asked  AI about…” I just want to reach out and smack them.

I just got the Kniveses ad again.  This was a targeted ad for Uncle Henry Kniveses.  I used to like Uncle Henry's things, but heard the quality has gone down when they changed manufacturing locations.  I can't speak to that with any first-hand knowledge.  At any rate there is what AI has chosen to be an appropriate photo to go with the ad.  There are a series of aluminum canisters with kitchen knives protruding from them.  If old Uncle Henry Baer ever put his name on any kitchen knives, I haven't seen them.  I do have some Imperial kitchen knives which were probably manufactured in some Baer family owned facility.
I get the feeling that whatever entity picks the photo to go with the sponsored ad it must go something like this.  Leatherman...zip.... multitool manufacturer..... photo required.... ping.....photo of multitool located..... burp.... photo inserted.....blap.  All completed in a micro-second with time for an AI coffee break and computer generated simulated cigarette.
Best wishes.  G
