Discontinue 93mm's????
on: May 05, 2026, 03:27:42 AM
On "another" forum, one of the forum members has stated that Victorinox is going to discontinue the 93mm SAK's.

Can this even be in the realm of possibility?????

No more alox, no more pioneers, farmers, farmer X.

I can only hope he's smoking something good.
Don't get too serious, just enough will do.

This is the first I’m hearing of it; I certainly hope it isn’t the case.

After some of the fairly recent expansion we’ve seen with the 93mm line, I’d be a little surprised if they suddenly reversed course and discontinued it.  But stranger things have happened.

However, we don’t have access to sales numbers or profit margins.  I believe Vic (not unreasonably) values the long-term viability of the business above all, and wouldn’t get sentimental about making changes to the product lines in support of that goal.

I hope it's not true. I am a fan of the alox range and see them as Vic's 'flagship' products.

Did the person who posted this give any source or substantiation?

I don’t have any special knowledge but it seems extremely unlikely to me. As has been noted, most of their recent releases have been on the 93mm platform, which I doubt would be the case if 93mm knives were not strong sellers.  Also, Victorinox have typically proceeded slowly and cautiously in both adding and removing lines e.g. the gradual rather than sudden decline of the 84mm range. Just drawing a line through the whole 93mm range one day would seem most un-Victorinox like to me.

I think I have persuaded myself that this is BS.

I hope not, that FarmerX is my fav, I’ve carried it and only it ever since it came out,, but this is like a new generation, the tools are taking a new shape with this Synergy style, so if they keep with it, in like 10yrs we’ll be looking back at the sak’s we bought which were prime, are all now discontinued because of new design..

Yep - Gotta be BS.

Last year they released the bladeless Companion Alox 93mms and later the whole Synergy family
They've been expanding the 93mm toolset and features with scissors, box cutter, pocket clips, new scale design, new scale colours - Extremely unlikely.

And on a historical/sentimental note: The 93mm Soldier and Pioneer have gotta be the longest running model with the fewest changes and one of Vic's most iconic product lines .... and as the 'sturdy' members of the Vic pocket knife family - I just cant see them being dropped!

Good news!  I just saw it confirmed.  Victorinox isn't going to discontinue the 93mm line.  That is straight from Bing's AI.  They got the true story from a highly regarded site, multitool.org ....wait a minute.  Never mind.  G

Very much so - THE iconic SAK for my money. Until the Pioneer X came out I was of the view that the only way it could be improved was by adding scissors. But now we have the Pioneer X, and I carried one for a long time, I’ve come to the view that although I am glad to have it as an alternative, I still prefer the slimmer Pioneer which feels better to me both in pocket and in hand. It turns out you can’t improve on perfection.

I've been out of the SAK world for a bit, just kinda getting back in, so forgive me if this is an ignorant question, but are the tools for 91 and 93 different or mostly the same? I know there are some tools which are only available on the 91 or 93, but what I mean is are the blades or saws or any other tool that is common between the 91 and 93 the same size or do they need specific tools per size? Is a 91mm main blade different than a 93mm main blade, for instance.

If the tool are different I could see them saying that the 91 and 93 overlap too much and having to manufacture separate tools for each isn't very cost effective. It might make business sense to drop the 93 and perhaps introduce 91mm alox? Of course, if the tools are mostly the same this completely destroys this senario.

The Alox tools are stronger - thicker and longer than their Cellidor cousins - Also stronger frame construction - ie scales and rivets

PS. On that topic I once saw a fleabay SAK listing where the wording looked mighty familiar - In fact so familiar I thought I had written it.
SO I checked SAKWiki and the text against the model in ebay vs SAKWiki was extremely similar - too similar to be independently made up, one would think - But the ebay listing had a few alternate words and was a little fluffier!

So I pinged the seller and asked him how he came about his description - Expecting him to say "I copied it from SAKWiki and changed the wording a bit' ....... But it turned out he asked AI !!!!

So we know from where AI got that description  :pok:

So once again - We are the source of truth!!

AI, the perfect source for people too lazy to do their own plagiarism.

For some reason I feel like we should make up some fictional BS SAKs to add to the Wiki to spoil the AI results. Though that would be cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I do occasionally ask the Google AI questions, and it has been known to give some egregiously wrong answers. Suggesting that not all the sources relied on are as unimpeachable as MTO and SakWiki.

If they needed to save money on metal, the could start by dropping the "parcel hook" from every model that has scissors

So, SlipjointSawyer and a Reddit post talk about going over ALL the 93mm Alox models that HAVE BEEN discontinued.  This must be a bad reading by ai, the kind that gets us Santa Clause with 6 fingers per hand riding a motorcycle with bikini clad chicks riding on the back, a red headlight, in a snowstorm

AI does a solid job spouting BS without any deliberate assistance.

Oh yeah - It certainly is - It is being continually updated with new releases and (sometimes major) improvements to existing content.
It is acknowledged to be the defacto source of truth for SAKs (eg all the FB groups refer to it) and even by Victorinox - For example we know they use it to check up on some historical information and they get in contact with us if ever it goes down to see if everything is OK.
And of course we are extremely grateful the all the previous editors, especially the original team - such as your goodself RR!!   :hatsoff:   :salute:

Yeah - I love that page - I wonder if we should put it in the main 91mm alpha list, as opposed to just accessible via a 'Related' link.
Maybe not - to keep it a little more secret and Easter eggy!
And if anyone has other ideas for spoof entries ... just let us know !!  ;)   :D

Even if Victorinox discontinue them all tomorrow, and all 93mm’s vanished from the secondary market, the horde I’ve amassed over the years would be enough for multiple lifetimes.

Ha ha ha!

I remember someone posting a video here of a guy on YouTube who found a dozen or two dozen uses for the hook.    I say again, FOUND uses for the hook.  I seem to recall picking it apart, use by use and showing other SAK tools that could do the job, or where the hook use was so contrives as to be near rediculous.

It's fun being the grinch sometimes
