My New Knife
on: February 23, 2009, 04:43:41 PM
Well I have had the same folder for over ten years now so I went out and purchased a new knife (Gander Mountain gift card was burning a hole in my wallet).  While browsing I narrowed it down to two knives.  What I wanted was the Kershaw Junkyard (even though it has a stupid looking pocket clip), but it was a little more than I wanted to spend...I am a cheap SOB.  So I walked away with the Benchmade Fecus plain edge.  It is from Benchmade's blue line (read cheap).  It has a 3.97" blade made from AUS8 steel.  It has a pocket clip (not movable-which I hate) and ambidextrous thumb stud.  It uses a Levitator locking system which seems pretty effective.  I was actually surprised at the blade lock-up, it is rock solid and does not move at all.  There is a lanyard hole at the base which, judging by its appearance, would actually work as a glass break.  This is a long knife but does not feel so big in the pocket, my old Boker is much smaller but feels heavier.  I posted a couple pics with the KF4 for size comparison.  Overall impression  :tu:

(from Benchmades website)LEVITATORâ„¢ A patented Benchmade exclusive, the knife handle scale/liner is cut to create a spring system which is used to leverage a lock-pin in and out of a notch in the tang of the blade. This spring/pin system effectively locks the blade both in the open and closed positions.

Looks lovely does that. It can't be that "cheap" if it's made from AUS 8 though can it? I thought that was decent steel?
I used to come here a lot.

It is a great steel, but is quite out of date compared to some options available.
I'm back!!

 :D :D

I still like it and regard it as probably the "lowest" steel I'd go on a folder.  There are many newer on more fancy steels available though.
I'm back!!

Can you still open it one hand with that lock? I recall the lock needs to be disengaged with one hand while blade opened with another.

No, you can open it with one hand.  You just need to depress the button to close it.  You can depress the button and flick it open but it is not that easy to do.

I have a few knives with AUS8 and I like it. Holds an edge well and sharpens easily. The only thing about that knife is its name..... "Fecus" sounds to close to "fecal" to me.  ;) :D   Good luck with your new knife.  :tu:
