I had a chat with SOG today regarding the Powercut. The project is indeed discontinued but will be started up again with a new design. They weren't happy with the results they were getting with the tool as it was shown.

And, regarding the wire stripper component they will be offering it for sale in about two months time.

Interesting. Sounds like there might have been more than just cutter life problems.

Can't wait to get my hands on that component.

I had a little chat with The Man himself last week......

While holding my homemade version in his hands and putting it through the paces, Spencer Frazer, president of SOG, talked to us about the long overdue PowerCut. Unfortunately he confirmed that the project has been shelved (after two years of development) because of an inherent weakness in the cutter jaw casting. Apparently, when attempting to cut tough wire, a portion of the jaw would sometimes shatter off and go flying away at high speed. This only happened under extreme cutting situations (large wire + big strong guy) but it was unacceptable from a quality standpoint, as well as being a safety concern. :(

The break would occur at this point here where it has the thinnest cross section:

(Picture from 2008 Shot Show)

The problem was identified as being due to the nature of investment castings like those used in forming the jaw blank. (note that all major multitool manufacturers use investment castings for their plier jaws) The grain structure of the metal is simply not as strong in castings as it is in forgings. But sadly, SOG does not have the ability to forge jaws themselves, and does not currently have a suitable outside source. :-\

We spoke at some length about other possible solutions, the whole time of course conveying the enthusiasm members here showed for the multitool/sidecutter/dykes concept, but it seems for now at least that the PowerCut is dead. :(

it seems odd that, considering how many manufacturers of side cutters the are, they cannot find one willing to make heads for them.

That does it then, time to make my own :(   For a lot of what I do side cutters would be just as useful to have as pliers.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

I bet they could team up and get Channellock to forge cutter heads right here in the USA.

the one SOG I would consider buying. I would love the powercut head, and then mod it with the implements least likely to overlap with the spirit I currently have to be able to carry both.

Makes me salivate just to think about it.

And depressed at the futility of it all.

To prevent overlap with the spirit (which has so many damn tools on it), these were the only SOG offerings I could find:

3" Straight Blade
C-4 Spike
V-Cutter
Wire strippers

And even out of these, I dont know what I would really do with the spike, and the wire strippers would not be used much, if ever.

The only other component I can think off is the paladin hook, and again, that would be something I would hardly ever use. And I suppose the bit driver attachment could be useful for non straight or phillips head screws.

And of course, I shouldn't ignore the main difference that would be apparent between the tools, the compound leverage powercut head compared to the pliers. Everything else would be a bonus really.
