I finally received my parts back from Mikko and will need to complete my mod by myself (gulp).  I am putting a pliers in a Farmer.  Am I correct that I need 2.5mm and 3mm brass rods?

Nice easy one to start with then cgk? :D

Look on the bright side, when you master this (and I mean when, not if), everything else will be easy-peasy ;)

Have fun and remember the worst you have to worry about is that you might have to have a couple of attempts, just go slow and steady. :tu:

I would like to start on my mod.  I can not find 2.5 and 3mm brass.  Anyone willing to part with a couple inches of each?  I can certainly reimburse.

Rotokid announced that he found a source for the right sized pins.  I don't know when they'll get to him. . .

Popped in to my local model shop this morning to find they've stopped selling metric stock  ???  Apparently there was too little demand.  Whilst I can still mail order, it was convenient to grab a couple of lengths and it was also just the right type (good strength to hardness).

If they don't carry metric, what do they carry?

I thought you didn't use "English" measurements in the UK anymore and it was just us Americans left using them.

Most stuff is in metric but you still find the occasional oddball tool or the like in inches.  I've no idea why they should be able to shift brass in imperial sizes and not metric.

We're a very odd Country when it comes to this.  In the 1960-70's we started to move over to metric, got about half way and then stopped.  We still think in miles not kilometers, people are still described in feet, inches and pounds.  We sell beer in pints not half litres, but we sell spirits in millilitres.  ::)  If you are buying food by weight then it will be displayed in both price/pound and price/kg.  These are just a few examples and there are many more. To top it all off we are only taught metric in schools never Imperial (or English as you would say).  Confused? Us? Never  :ahhh.

As Neil says, there's lot of imperial measurements still used in the UK actually. Things like groceries are measured in Kgs rather than lbs, but all of our roadsigns still use miles for example. It's hard to imagine that we'll ever completely switch to metric.

Most Brits would be comfortable using both I would imagine.

Most, yes. Me I wish they'd just do everything in metric.  Science background I suppose :)

The only time it really bugs me is with tools.  Almost all the tools I use/come across are metric so when I'm confronted with some oddball item with imperial dimensions I have a bit of a  :ahhh  moment and get annoyed that I'm going to have to work out a conversion or that the tool is likely not going to be the right size for what I want to do.  Last time this happened was with parallel punches in the DIY store down the road.  I went and bought elsewhere.  Not out of principle or anything so petty but just because I didn't have a clue if they'd fit the holes I'd be putting them through.

I'm waiting for time to go metric.  What's this 60 sec to a minute, 60 minutes to an hour, 24 hours to a day crap?

You can thank the Babylonians and their base 12 math for that.  Oddly, no one has really adopted metric time since the French Revolution, other than for computing anyway.

I had no idea that the UK were converting to metric. When did that happen? Anyway, isn't it odd that the nation who so fiercely fought to proclaim its independence from a king-and-queen regime is the only one still using imperial units? :pok: :D

Have you noticed how we Brits measure the cold winters in Celsius and the warm summers in Fahrenheit.

For example....it was -2 degrees last week but the summer before was in the 90's

There's a good example of an old scale I've never been able to get my head around, Fahrenheit.  What the chuff is going on there then  :ahhh    My mother occasionally still tries to tell me temperatures in it but thankfully the weather forecasts and most everyone I speak with uses Celsius.

I also measure people weight in Kg.  I say people as I try to avoid discovering my own weight like the plague  :-[

I would think weighing in stones would be popular here in the states.

Putting on 1/8 of a "stone" doesn't sound as bad as a couple of pounds.

Howdy folks,
I do have the 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.5mm. and 3.0mm in house already and the 2.2mm is due here in two days. It is actual 2.2mm and is what is used in the knives originally. I was waiting to switch the info in the store until the 2.2 landed but I will do that tonight. I was able to set up a deal that will allow me also to not raise the prices on any of the sizes. They will remain $2 a stick with free U.S. shipping. I brought in allot of the material so we can put the issue to bed and make modding much more fun.

The whole imperial thing relates to age I think. I was taught in metric at school but my parents and the carpentry college I went to afterwards were happily computing away in imperial. It's some the British aren't quite ready to give up!

Great news about the brass rod too  :tu:

Well Tom posted over on SOSAK that he got the rod in now- so we're good. 2.2mm is the only one he doesn't have for now, then tomorrow he is supposed to have the rest. I hope. :D

I know this is an old thread,  but considering that the store at sosak is closed, I'm wondering if there are any new sources for 2.2 and 2.5 mm brass rods?

Have a look here:

In Germany conrad.de offers 2.2 mm brass rods. Called "Rundprofil Messing".
