on: January 29, 2009, 03:26:16 AM
i have read some hinting posts that the two are just not meant to be... but nothing really stating other then its crap... it looks good with 3 led bulbs and a push button on the tail cap is a double plus for me. what is your take?

I have the three LED drop in for the mini Mag, but not the tailcap switch.

The three LED drop in all but eliminates the reflector (it comes with a modified one), so there is no spot.  It's all floodlight, but still plenty bright for regular indoor/closeup tasks.  For the money I think they are a good upgrade to the regular bulbs.

EDIT:
Look into the Terralux drop in LEDs, I EDC a mag with one and it's awesome; flood, spot, WHITE light (the Nite Ize comes off a little blue)

I have the Nite Ize set up for my Maglite mini.  Overall I like it better, but there are times when I wish I could focus it like original.  Batteries last much longer and the tailcap switch is extremely handy.

I looked at the Terra Lux kit, Nite Ize kit and Victorinox LED's some time ago:

At the time the three LED Nite Ize kit was the worst performer, but supposedly they have improved it since then.  I haven't seen or tested a new one.

The first upgrade I did on my mini mag was a Niteize and was happy with it, as said before a very 'floody' beam but OK.  I then got a Terralux and was blown away by the difference.  Much whiter colour and you get the focus back.

This is the one I have;

They also did a tail button that I preferred, but that's more of a personal choice.

Unless you only want it for close up work I'd skip the niteize three LED upgrade and go for a terralux.

Last time I looked/purchased they had a couple of options, one comes as a kit with a couple of reflectors and a bulb adaptor, this will work with various torches not just mags, its a fraction brighter than the original bulb on new batteries and the run time is very good.

They also do a more expensive upgrade just for the 2xAA mag that doubles the runtime of the original bulb and is very bright (about 100 lumens if memory serves me well). I have the cheap upgrade in my son's torch and the brighter version in the household torch that's clipped up in the pantry. (Thanks for the clips Ryan  :tu:)

I've tried the tail cap switches, I found them unreliable and they also dropped the current/brightness.  That was a couple of years ago though, things may have improved.

Thing that is cool about the Nite ize however is the cost. For 5 bucks at wallmart you can get the bulb and boom your minimag is back to working. Think how many minimags are around your house? I got one in every car and truck I got.

In a recent power outage, I found a 2AA Mag and the cluster LED upgrade to be fantastic! They are cheap, efficient, and decent.. I ended up not having anymore AA batteries; so I was able to take them out of one of my TV remotes as well.. Another great feature is their ability to tail stand!

Strictly budgetary choice, but a solid one.

well i broke down an bought one.  well i did not buy it per say, but rather i got a gift card from dicks sporting goods (score card points) and i just picked it up for free.  yes i typed right i got it for free!  you know regardless of how well it is or it is not, free is free.  ya cant shake a stick at that!  but i dropped it in and shined it around the house in some of the darker spots (its mid day currently) and it did  well.  but we will see.  the push button tail cap is really nice though!  i will report back, after i can steal my light back form my son.  he has a thing for flash lights....

i have taught him well  :D

well after playing with it, i can not complain.  i feel that it was worth the money.  yeah there are better ones, but i already have 5 mini mags and dont want more flashlights.  i'll just upgrade the last that i do have.  heck, lowes has the upgrades for 7 bucks.  yoso cant shake a stick at that deal!

my 2cents for anyone else looking at this, for the price, you just can beat it. like i said there are better ones, but if you are in my boat, you just can go wrong...

As stated above, the niteize led cluster is a good upgrade for the price, I found their tailcap switch to be poorly constructed and mine died after about a week of daily use.  The led upgrade makes batteries last forever and when you drop it the bulb still works.

I did the changeover on my Mini Mag AA and like has been said for the money I couldn't go wrong :tu:

I like the IQ tailcap switch and all the different settings as well :)

When the power goes out I am gonna be glad that I have changed it cause he batteries won't be dead ;)

Yep, for power outages looooong time reigns supreme. That's why I have a 2AA Mini-Mag with the Nite-Ize drop in. Now, I had a spare Kroll clicky switch so I use it. But the 3 led is a good setup, plenty of light for when there is no light and loooong run time. Well, until I fire up my generator that is. Then it's back to t.v, and hanging out like nothings happened. :D

I just have to mention that Nite Ize does make a single-cell drop in, as well as clusters in red, blue and green.
