Headlamps!
on: March 06, 2009, 01:15:32 PM
Hey guys :)

been looking for a high quality all round good head lamp for ages...ok well not me but a mate of mine (I'm in the red at the moment :pok:)

The two that I am thinking of recommending him are these

PrincetonTec Apex

http://www.legear.com.au/PrincetonTec-Apex-Head-Lamp-p/pt-apx-bk.htm

and the Photon Freedom Fusion

http://www.legear.com.au/Photon-Freedom-Fusion-L-E-D-Headlamp-p/photon-fusion.htm

By the way is there major difference between the Apex and the EOS???

The main criteria is value for money and if it is able to survive after being dropped in the drink

Thanks guys in advance :salute:

I was tempted to buy a headlamp since forever. Then I got this one and never looked back.   :multi:

I have a Petzl Tikka plus.  It is robust and runs forever on 3 AAA batteries.  If it ever dies, I'm going for the new Petzl Tikka XP.  Really nice light.

APEX is probably the best on market as far as mass produced headlight is concerned. It use 4AA pack on back of head (or 2x123a, or 8AA on belt depends on model) as oppose to 3AAA in EOS, so runs longer, higher output, but of course heavier (except the belt version). It also have secondary floody 5mm LED. Make sure you get the 130 lumen version not the older 60/80. I had the 4AA version, and if I were to choose again I'm go for the 8AA belt pack version.

Never heard of the photon headlight.

Oh yeah that reminds me, Princeton tec lights have dead flat regulation whereas others (i.e. petzl) have only a simple boost circuit so the output is constantly diminishing sorta like a direct drive. The benefit of full regulation is no matter what cell you put in there (alkaline, lithium, NiMH) the output will be the same, but in petzl they warn against using lithium because its higher voltage will overdrive the LED and cause overheat.

I pack a Tikka XP . Luv it . I use the diffuser , and the turbo mode quite a dit . Princeton Tech are a tad hard to find in my hood , Petzel is readily available ... ergo sum .... I usually get about 2-3 working days per battery set . And I have a spare set taped to the headband . I usually let mine hang around my neck , and pull it up onto my head as needed .

If I ever win the lottery , I might check out the new Surefire saint .
