I took pics of an ultra secret new Ranger model as well, but I am not yet cleared to post them.  The marketing manager for North America said he would trust me to take pics but not post them till I got the go ahead.  It's killing me, because I know it was something you guys were looking for!

Time to start filling this thread with pointless speculation I think.  ;)

Is it the Mike Horn Special?  :)

I guessed right.  :P  :D

Very cool Boss.  As I said somewhere else it rather looks like the plain blade is for the left hand, the rope cutting/rescue blade is for the right hand.  I can't imagine it's easy to reach passed one blade to get to the other.  Any thoughts?  Is there a lock release, for the plain blade, on the reverse side?

I really like the look of this, and I like the attempt at green credentials as well.  Good job on keeping it to yourself, it must have been tough.  :salute:

Few questions

*Are both OH blade locking? Seem only serrated is.

*If the modified awl is taking place of the usual phillips/corkscrew, what's the the usual awl spot?

*Is the awl sharpened? I just used the awl on ranger 58 drilling a hole on leather last night and it simply doesn't work.

*So besides the blades, there's file, pliers, and can opener, did I get everything (aside from what's in awl slot)?

*Wood pulp in plastic, I duno, just can't see that being durable.

List of tools?

That's pretty close to what I'm gonna do with a Locksmith and OHT.  It would be rockin' if it had pliers in there...

He doesn't name it but it looks like the same knife to me.  Andy Tiedye spotted what it was as well.

As for the other questions, this knife was/is a prototype, so it's hard to say for certainty what the final version will be.

It comes with a nice case that holds two bits, and yes, the slot in the handle is a standard 1/4" hole.

As you can see, it comes with pliers.

The serrated blade doesn't lock, although there was some talk about putting the shield/lock mechanism on the opposite scale for the serrated blade.

Good info.

Well, if it ever goes from Prototype to production, it will become my pack knife.  I can't make that selection of tools into a single functional package--especially if it's lighter than the LM Wave.

Don't take me wrong: I strongly believe that the Mike Horn Ranger is a force to be reckoned. However, I can't help but wonder if Mike is actually going to use that tool or if he already has a favorite/EDC one (that is, if he uses anything other than specialized tools in his endeavor)... I mean, for its size and weight I think that the average forumite here could easily suggest a handful of MTs with much better ergonomics and far more implements... :-\

Thanks for the link!  That is the tool I would design for technical climbing.  No need for a bottle opener or woodsaw (with a serrated knife).  File is hugely helpful, as is the bit driver.  Basically a stripped down LM Wave.

My SAK mod is coming along nicely.  Just waiting for brass pinstock.  It will be 91 mm based, with file, small blade and bit driver--Bare essentials for a day of multipitch climbing.

Next up will be a bigger version for a pack--If it's lighter than a LM Wave.

The Mike Horn Ranger would be a direct competitor for the Wave as a multiday trekking/mountaineering tool.
