Cleaned my Swiss champ in the dishwasher

Well, having read it was a good idea I tried throwing my very grubby old champ in the dishwasher to clean it.

I have to say, it looks like a damn fine job. It's now having a little oil bath so I'm not totally sure it hasn't been harmed but it seems OK so far, and very shiny. I'm really not opposed to using elbow grease for these things but I wanted to try this method out on something which was in a fairly bad state.

Now I need to learn how to rescale the poor old thing and it will be all shiny and new again. For some stupid reason I thought using it as a hammer was a clever idea many moons ago

There easy to do, just use a Vic can opener to pop the old ones off, then the new ones clip back on just using a bit of a squeeze

I'll piggyback my question in this thread instead of creating a new one.

Over the weekend I won a couple of eBay auctions for TSA forfeiture SAKs and am curious how folks clean and disinfect used knives before putting them into service.

One of the used SAKs has an LED light, I don't think the dishwasher is a good idea

I've never had any luck with dishwashers, it always mucks them up. Either that or I put it on a cold wash and it doesn't do anything worthwhile. How everyone else makes this work for them I don't know.

When I get a grimy SAK I rinse under warm water, then add a little dish soap to a nail brush and attack all its crevices. Bigger dish brushes can also be used and for really stubborn spots a pipe cleaner. Then I rinse and dry.

From the number of rusty Leathermans I've seen I wouldn't try one of them in the dishwasher.

I have never had an issue with it myself, but others have said they had problems with melted scales, and I imagine that doing this on a regular basis will eventually destroy just about any scale. That having been said, I still do it, but then I have a few spare knives lying around...

I'm sure it was on the Vic site I read that too - it made reference to the fact that they did once, but not now - I'll have a quick scout round.....

Did my old SC tonight in the dishwasher - fairly clean but stiff, as you might imagine. I've soaked it in silicon lubricant GT-85 (my fav, much better than WD40 usually as it doesn't attract the dirt) - but it's not got as smooth an action as it had before.

What's the best thing to lube them with?

I'm currently lubing everything in sight with 3-IN-ONE PTFE spray. It seems to be a good balance between working well and attracting gunge. The straw is useful to target the bits that matter.

I've been using it for 6 months or so now, and haven't yet found a reason to stop.

I use Ballistol on air guns, tools and just about everything else - it also works well on wood and leather. The stuff has a thousand uses

sounds like the GT085 stuff. find it penetrates ok into hinges, etc?

The best stuff to use is Tuf Glide! It is a dry film, so it doesn't attract grime and it's waterproof!

Any liquid will gather gunk. I prefer to use powdered graphite or nothing at all. If I use any kind of liquid lubricant, it's usually either plain old mineral oil or INOX, which is mineral oil and a food grade penetrating compound.
