Good to see you over here Kafer.  You'll know a few folks here already.  :)

And yet he joined anyhow. Go figure.

   ;)  :D

Ben X - Yes, the stock awl is too thick to fit the saw layer.  I used a trick Scibeer told us about on the other forum.  You a member there?  Basically you mount two awls on a really flat surface and sand them down at the same time.  Of course, after all that I neglected to check the width on the tang of the vintage phillips driver  :(

Yeah, I'm on SOSAK too, somehow I missed that tip  Sanding sounds tedious! How long did it take and what grit(s) did you use? Looks like you got a really polished look in the end, I never would have noticed! I have to admit, the only awl mod I've done was years ago before I took my Tinker to Jamaica I touched the flat side to a bench grinder and took some width off to make it more slender for locks in case I needed it (which I didn't of course, but I was afraid to take lock picks into the country for obvious reasons...). Anyway even with the bench grinder, seems like it took longer than I expected to get it slimmed down. But very nice work, I had no ida you had done this stuff! Is it in the mod index on SOSAK?

Sorry I didn't get back to this thread faster.  Firefox crapped out a couple days ago and I've been slow getting things back in order.

Yeah, the Hiker's Special is in the mod index.  It even was the SAKtivity picture for a weekend over at SOSAK On Line, and has recieved some 'press' lately when Gareth UK made his Camper's Special.

Scibeer's Penny Tech thickness sander is also on the list.

I don't think I used the buffing wheel on mine, but I worked with 80, 120, 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, and 1500 grits.  It took me awhile, maybe a couple of hours.  Mostly due to frustration with my setup.  I think Scibeer said it took him a few minutes. . .

Here's the link to the Lumberjack mod thread.
