Power Assist Full Auto Blade
on: April 14, 2009, 05:37:21 PM
Just got a Power Assist and noticed that the serrated blade is full auto, by which I mean, you slide the lock backward and then press the Arc Lock button down and the blade deploys and locks without having to touch the thumbstud at all. Is this normal with the Power Assist?
I did also notice a design flaw too, where the Arc Lock button is housed the rocker inside the handle comes into contact with the blade edge, causing a small flat spot in the edge about 2 thirds the way down the blade. Anyone else noticed this?

I don't think it supposed to do that.

I checked my PowerAssist and it does not do that with either blade. When I press on the lock release all the way it gets about 3/4 of the way required for the assist to kick in. I tried it multiple times and no issues. I would say contact SOG about a repair.

It's actually quite handy as it means I can open the serrated blade without having to flip it over or change hands, I can open it "blind" almost as if it were a feature for right handers to easily open a left handed blade. It's not a problem for me, just wondered if anyone else had encountered it?

Mine doesn't do that either.  I would imagine there is something "wrong" with yours, but if you are happy with the function then I would just enjoy it!

Like my SideClip with the unground screwdriver, you got one of the ones that slipped past QC!

I confess to being intrigued by the Powerassist. But they are so expensive.

they aren't that pricey when you actually get to see one, they are beautifully engineered! My EDC was a Leatherman Charge TTi but now it's retired to the shelf as the Power Assist has taken it's place on my belt! I would recommend the SOG PA, it has limited tools, i.e. no saw etc but the functionality and quality are awesome! Save those pennies and get one, I did and love it. I'm saving up for the Black Oxide version too now!

Save those pennies and get one...

I try, I swear, but every time I get up to about £20, someone on here makes me spend it ;)

I'll almost certainly hang around until someone (maybe you :D) is bored with theirs and wants to trade it.

If I get a nice new black one, who knows! Anyhoo, well worth trying to save for one matey, awesome piece of kit! I have had, or have, most of the flagship tools, Swisstool, Leatherman Charge etc but the SOG, in my opinion, is the best.

I had it in mind that they were more than that actually. Still, it's still getting on for close to double what I normally pay for multis - I think that closest I've paid to that was about £70 inc. duty on my Cabela's Charge.

Wanna swap it for a Swisstool :D

I am already sold I would love one  ::) ::) :D. Just waiting on the Govt. pen pushers to get back to me , to see if a Powerassist, if  I buy one ,will end up in my letter box or the smelter  ::)
Tinny has put me onto a OZ based seller but he is selling them for a lot more than they go for on us Ebay. The situation with AO knives in OZ is a bit infuriating as there are local sellers(bandits ::) high prices) but customs does seize AO knives bought by individuals  :ahhh

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before they outlaw AO in the UK too!

Wonder why they allowed it, locking blade and spring assist, surely they must've picked up on it, maybe the powers that be aren't clued up on the technology yet.

I have one coming (S66) as i couldnt resist the pure gadget factor on this one.

Never owned a SOG before so hopefully its other features eg-compound leverage, one hand flip opening will be just as appealing as the Spring Assist.

I paid $160 AUD with free shipping from an australian online retailer, and there is a couple of others who are selling them.

This is only $20 AUD more than what i paid for my crunch so i thought the price was very reasonable.

Welcome to the forum mate. That is a crapp load of coin for the Powerassist (they go for $55-$70us on Ebay). BUT there is the issue if customs notices the AO it will get seized . I got a reply from OZ customs & any AO knife falls into the 'flick knife' & requires a permit to import & own. I still do not know home the OZ online stores get around the 'illegal' issue   .
DJ look at US ebay for your multi tools normally 1/2 too 1/3 the price in OZ  ;) :D :D

Yes i agree, US prices kick butt as opposed to the profits some retailers make over here.

I always check international pricing before buying here (and it was preferable prior to the aussie dollar dropping)
but just too risky in regards to customs with this one.

Its funny how we see alot of spring assist knives for sale in australia when technically they are banned.
Maybe they havent been classified properly yet?

I must say i avoid trying to import any edged items but i have always wondered if they frown upon multi tools in general eg leatherman wave, am i safe you think, as i wouldnt mind buying some used multi's at reasonable prices.

We dont see many used multi's in australia thats for sure.

I just dont want to be wondering if my multi's will get siezed by customs.

No mate you should be alright. My golden rule is aim to buy for $50us before shipping & I will have snagged a bargain (rule has been broken a number of times  ::) :D).
I would really like a Kershaw Leek with a Damascus blade , but I reckon it would be too high risk of seizure . I know Tinnie had a AO SOG(?Twitch) seized by Aussie customs .
I think a Powerassist would have a good chance of getting through as it does not look like a 'flick knife' , I am very tempted to try ::) ::)

I have bought quite a few MT's from the US with no problems at all . Including a Leatherman folder with LM's 'Blade Launcher' system , which could easily be classified as a 'flick knife' under the very broad ambiguous OZ regulations.
There are massive bargains to be had DJ , when compared too the pants down rogering we get with get with pricing in OZ.

Mat, do you buy from ebay only?

I have been trolling ebay(US) and the prices are much better.

BTW- you wouldnt happen to be an ex customer of Elite Steel and the associated forum??

This thread is goin waaaay off topic.....

SOG PA should be in my hot little hands today or tommorow, will post my opinion.
