For mechanically-minded tool lovers like ourselves, NASA's step-by-step account of how they built the spacecraft for the moon program is a fascinating read:Link: Chariots for ApolloI've read and re-read the whole thing three times now. Amazing history for those who are into that sort of thing.
Mans natural urge to explore has gotten pretty thin...but imagine the money, time, energy and manpower could be spent on space travel if America wasn't mired down in *ahem* "other things". We've mapped every corner of the surface and the depths of the ocean, the mountaintops, the valleys...everything. The next logical step is to explore space. And by getting to that point, we'd need to develop an alternate energy source. Or I should say harness a new energy source. The things we would have to develop and the problems we'd have to solve by getting to another planet would be just as beneficial if not more than the actual mission.

True, but it's not just the US. Imagine how great this world would be if we ALL spent our time helping other people and doing things for the betterment of mankind.
Here's a great series of photos commemorating our getting off this rock.http://blogs.denverpost.com/captured/2009/07/17/40th-anniversary-of-apollo-11-moon-landing/
Not long finished Buzz's latest book. He had a hard time after all the fuss died down: depression, alcoholism - living up to the 'hero' he became - good honest read.

After you've been the first humans to land on the moon, what else in life could compare?
