Question about the Charge line-up.
on: August 31, 2009, 04:41:34 AM
As most of you are aware, I am trying to get my Leatherman collection sort of finished somewhat.

I am getting a bit confused on the Charge nomenclature and features. Let me recap what I think, and please correct me if I am wrong.

I will soon be adding a Charge Ti to the collection. Doing some research, it gets a bit murky between the older Ti & XTi, and the newer AL, ALX, and TTi.

My confusion is probably rampant due to Leatherman’s decision to not put model numbers on their Charge models.

So, this is what I think and sort of figured out on my own...

1. Charge Ti has no cap crimper and no gut hook on the sheepsfoot. Only has one bit driver and scissors. Knife blade is 154CM. Titanium handles.
2. Charge TTi is pretty much the same as the older Ti except of the cap crimper and gut hook. Oh and the knife blade is S30V stainless. Titanium handles.
3. The AL is the same as the TI except for the handle materials. The blade is 154CM. No cap crimper and no gut hook.
4. The XTi has the cap crimper, gut hook, and two bit drivers, and blade is 154CM.Titanium handles.
5. The ALX has the same tool load out as the XTi, with aluminum handles instead of titanium. Blade is 154CM.

Is that about right? I wonder why Leatherman discontinued the Ti and XTi. At first glance, it would appear that the newer lineup doesn’t offer much that is different from the older discontinued models.

Talk about confusion.  :think:

Your indeed correct!  :cheers:

I think they discontinued the Ti/XTi because they would have to raise the prices or something because of the Ti handles.  ???

Don't forget there's also the Costco exclusive SLV, which is identical to the AL except in grey instead of black.

I keep forgetting about that one. So the only difference is the colour?

You know, it just dawned on me, when all the currently ordered Leatherman stuff comes in, I will have a total of 60 Leatherman MTs. A group pic will be taken when this next round of MTs come in.

I will still need an XTi for the official (from their website) Leatherman model completion along with a knifeless fuse. Got a SS and BO version of the 300 on order whenever they ship.

I also don't have:

Camo XTi, Ti. Um...Australian Juice (ugly and I know I won't even bother trying to find these as I know they are super rare (I will take Bob's word on that)).
Black Oxide versions of the older Leathermans (whichever model was given the BO treatment. I have a current bid on a BO PST (good chance I will get it). I am also missing any other BO Charges other then the ALX.
Anniversary 10 and 20 year stuff (Yeah, like I am going to find this stuff anytime ever).
If I want to get real type A, the various colour versions of the Squirts and Juices (I don't see myself getting them as I am quite pleased with the ones I already have).
Also missing a Charge SLV.

My goal for the Leatherman collection is almost complete with a few items I can try to find slowly.

Short term plan:

Hunt for a knifeless Fuse, XTi, and possibly an SLV.

Long term plan: Keep slowly chipping away at the BO list.

Full model completion is never going to happen, considering their argentum line.

Good list. I will have all the TTis, ALXs, one Ti when the current stuff comes in.

I don't yet have any of the other Charge Tis, no XTi, missing the BO AL and the SLV.

The Ti and XTis are darn near impossible to get up here though. At least for the 2.5 months I have been looking of them on eBay.ca. :)

A simple way of remembering which Charge is which is:

Ti = AL = SLV
XTi = ALX
TTi = Ti + XTi

Science is good.

I used to come here a lot.

Check Canadian Tire.  I don't think they carried the Ti's, but I know they carried the XTi's as that's where I got mine.  You might luck out and get one with some older stock.

It is getting tricky to find the old Ti models now, particularly new ones.

My own (plain) XTi was pretty badly beaten, I need a new plier head for it! The Ti however, is my joint favourite Charge, along with the TTi. Mmmm, Charge.....

I have already checked Canadian Tire.

In fact, the local one only sells a Surge, A core, a Skeletool, a Kick, and that is it currently. I can remember when they stocked juices etc...but I wasn't into collecting them back them and sadly didn't give them a second glance.

Well so far, regarding that nice Charge list.

I have:

1: Won off eBay but not in yet.
11: Just bought recently at the local store.
13: Bought a while back from the local store.
14: Bought off of eBay but not in yet.
16: Bought a while back from the local store.
17: Bought at Cabela's but not in yet.
18: Bought at Bass Pro Shop but not in yet.
19: Bought off of eBay a while back.
20: Bought off eBay a while back.

So I think I am doing well on the newer models. Not so good on the older ones. At least I have a Ti coming in.

In my opinion the charges with dual bit drivers aren't for me, the trade off of a lost implement to have a second bit driver when you can just carry extra bits for the bit drivers is just annoying.

True enough. I don't need to get them all. Originally, I just wanted one of every model made by Leatherman. Then I found out the more I dug that there were more models then I could have ever dreamed about. I resisted getting the BO models because they are the same thing, just different colours. Likewise with the Juice models. However, I have just started to get the BO models because they look neat and interesting. I also know there are two versions, one with cap crimper and one without. At the moment, I am not worrying about that small detail even though I know its a difference, however slight.

From the list, I would love to get at least one XTi, and the SLV just because its odd. The rest can wait until I see something that comes along that I don't have. A target of opportunity so to speak.
