I usually just wing it, but then I don't use scopes often. I'll usually take a shot aiming through the scope then adjust each shot by what the scope was off and not adjust the scope.
But then, I'm a lazy bugger too! :grin:

The crosshair adjusters on a scope will usually indicate how far each "click" moves the crosshair on the target at a certain distance. You should be able to center it up pretty quickly on a bench since it is already close.
