We asked everyone about the new tool- it's not a new tool, but there are some ideas in mind for new handles on the Spirit.  They had no information about it there, but the head of Vic in the US is going to email me some images of what the proposed new version is going to look like, and I will post them as soon as I get them.

There was also some discussion of adding a Soft Touch silicone/rubber coating to scales of some SAKs in the near future, and the possibility of seeing it applied to the Spirit as well.  This might be the same Spirit as above, or it might be two separate experiments- I hope to know more when the images arrive.

Hmm, finding it hard to imagine, since the handles on the spirit are already very very comfortable, rubber wont make them more so IMO, or maybe I've just never pressed on them hard enough. But then rubber would ruin the all steel look and feel.

I wish this is not going to be it, that would be rather disappointing, I hope they have something more interesting up their sleeve.

For me, rubber inserts would be a big help.  That Vic high polish finish is really hard to reliably hold when working in Maryland clay soil, oil or grease.

I don't think the idea is to make them more comfortable, so much as increasing the grip and making the handles less slick, but again, I really can't say for sure.

Probably late, but what about them adding rulers onto the Spirit as one of their upgrades?  :pok:

I'll mention it, but the big issue is that the SHOT Show is an opportunity for them to tell us what they are working on, not us telling them what they should be producing!  :D

Good to know they're planning something new for the 91mm range, even if it is just some new scales, perhaps based around the new 111mm scale material?

I would like to see them come up with some new 91mm models (or bring back some old ones?) rather than just tinker around with the scales though. :-\

Did anyone mention what steels the damascus is made from? This is their chance to work in something with some edge retention.

I'm really disappointed they're working on "improving" a damn-near-perfect tool instead of addressing that opening in their line.

is it me or does that Pioneer have a rough grind?  Not owning a damascus myself i'm not too privy if that's the way it's supposed to be.

I'm curious on how sharp the ceramic knives are. The ones I've seen are decently sharp but not as good as what I can get with steel knives. And since I have nothing to sharpen them with I'm stuck with what they come with.

(Image removed from quote.)

The dual density line is well documented by now, so I didn't spend a lot of time looking at them, although I did get a few pictures.  The new DAK also comes in a civilian version calls the Dual Pro, which features dual density scales similar to the New Soldier, but I wanted to see how it operated.

Def

Could someone point me in the direction of the well documentation of the DAK?  I only saw mention of it a long time about and that it would have to two one-hand blades.  Are the scales similar to the GAK or the Vic Soldier?  How readily available are the DAK's?  The Dual Pro will be nice too, but I'd like to see a picture of a DAK.

The new DAK is not available yet, I hope it will be soon.
It will have exactly the same olive-green scales as the former 111mm DAK.
Otherwise it looks like the dual-pro with a philips-screwdriver.

my understanding is that, one advantage of damascus steel is that the folds give a form of micro-serrations on the blade.

I've found my Kyocera ceramics to be as sharp as my steel knives, but they do interact differently with different materials.  I use steel more often, but not because of sharpness I would say.  Mine have seemed to dull a bit with use, and am investigating home sharpening methods for use one day.

I'll almost certainly try 1 Vic ceramic.  Over all I like ceramic knives.... but then I like a lot of things.
